Plucking Along

Plucking Along

Hello everyone, this week of my guitar journey, I was learning how to fingerpick. Fingerpicking is picking the strings one at a time using your right hand. I learned that the thumb picks the bottom three strings (E, A, D), and your index, middle, and ring fingers pick the three top strings (G, B, E). I watched YouTube videos and some TikToks to learn beginner fingerpicking. One of the TikToks taught me an abbreviation for the fingers on your right hand: P-Thumb, I-Index, M-Middle, A-Ring (from the Spanish word “anular”). Eventually, you can create different patterns using this trick.

I tried to find videos where they only used one or two chords while picking to keep it simple enough for myself. One TikToker that really helped me was @emmasusamusic.

Another creator I found very helpful was YouTuber @AcousticGuitarVideosLessons. I liked that he gave us a chance to join in with him and the repetition. I practiced the same patterns in the videos until I felt comfortable moving on. I’m noticing how players are positioning their hands, and I’m trying to find a position I find comfortable. So far I’ve really enjoyed this week’s guitar learning, and it’s one of my favorite things I’ve learned this far.

  1. Hi heidi,

I am pretty sure the only thing I am good at is finger picking, and saying I am good at might still be a stretch. I always find Tik Tok helpful to really learn anything because the videos are short and sweet so they get to the point which is what I like.
    Keep up the good work!

  2. Hey Heidi,

I loved hearing about your progress in finger picking. The abbreviation for the right fingers PIMA is a pretty cool way to remember where your fingers should be. TikTok is such a great resource to use when learning something new! Thanks for sharing, I look forward to reading about your progress next week.
