Hi my name is Jacey Henrikson and I am a first year student at the U of R. I am currently enrolled in the Faculty of Education in hopes of obtaining a degree in Middle Years Education. I am 18 years old and grew up in the small town of Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. Living in a rural community offers many diverse opportunities but doesn’t allow for much new social interaction. For this reason I am excited to meet new people through university.
During high school I was employed as a lifeguard, swimming lesson instructor, and assistant dance teacher. These activities provided a first hand experience with youth and sparked my passion for teaching. I was also involved in many extracurricular activities including basketball, volleyball, badminton, dance, track, choir, drama, Student Leadership Council, and Volunteens. Many of my closest friends came from the opportunities I have had within these various activities.
I am currently a full time online student. Which is stressful since I lack knowledge of technology and I have never been an online learner. I am excited to move to campus when my classes are in person. I look forward to challenging myself to learn at a university level and meet new friends along the way!

Throughout my childhood I enjoyed spending time with my family. I grew tight bonds with not only my immediate family but my extended family as well. Family bonding became a core value within my life. My family added a baby boy when I was 2, giving me a younger brother to share life with and become my best friend.

Throughout my life I have been inspired by so many people: teachers, coaches, community members, fellow classmates, and family. My grandpa Jim Hack also had a huge impact on my career decision. He has worked in the education field for my whole life, from a principal to working with the Horizon school division board. He has taught me many simple lessons. From a young girl I can remember the words “think about it.” From spelling tests in grade 1, multiplication in grade 5, to finals in grade 12 those three simple words provide a sense of clarity and calmness. As I pursue education and come across obstacles I will remember to “think about it,” and this will allow me to continue to pursue my passion. My grandmother Patti Hack became my biggest role model. The way she viewed the world and people as a whole is a perspective I now maintain in my everyday life. She was in the profession of teaching and told many stories on the impacts her students had on her.
When sitting around campfires at my cabin, at Madge Lake SK alongside my family the conversation often sounded like a teaching conference with Grandma teacher, Grandpa principal, Auntie teacher, Uncle Educational psychologist, and many friends in the profession.
