My experience in the field for my eight-week block was really great. I was in a Grade 2 classroom. I have had the opportunity to explore and teach in many subject areas such as Science, Social Studies, P.E., Math, ELA and Arts Ed. In addition, I took part in leading the morning routine. Throughout the semester, I have felt more comfortable planning lessons. I feel as though I have also progressed in implementing them. As for instructional strategies, I have explored a few, but I have mostly focused on direct teaching. What comes with direct teaching that I have learned is the importance of prompting and questioning. For my next field placement, I would like to explore different kinds of instructional strategies.
I have learned a lot during my field experience, but my biggest takeaway was the importance of clear instructions and expectations, as well as modelling the expectations for students to see. Every week, I made it a goal to improve in doing so. As for classroom management, I believe that I have progressed in this area throughout my time in the field. Positive reinforcement and attention getters are the two things that I learned were the most important in managing a class. However, although these two are very important, I believe that a foundation of having strong relationships with students is equally important.
On our last day in the field, my partner and I decided to do a fun winter craft with our Grade 2 students. Everyone loved it! Below is a class picture of everyone holding up their “Melting Snow Man.”
Overall, I have had a really great time in my eight-week block and have learned a lot of new things about teaching. Furthermore, my coop’s tips, advice and encouragement have helped me feel more aware and confident in my practice. My goal for my next field experience is to take everything that I have learned and incorporate them into my practice. I am excited to acquire more knowledge next semester and for everything that I am yet to experience in the field.
