Arrrgh! Where Do I Start?
In week 8 of our class Dean brought in Chris Kennedy, Superintendent of West Vancouver School Division and a leader in AI. I told him my school, and many Saskatchewan divisions are behind the times and slow to create their own policies around AI. I asked him where do we start? Where can we look? How do we go about creating our own policies? He suggested two things. One, don’t label them policies. Instead refer to them as administrative technology procedures or principles or guidelines. I don’t recall why he said this, so if anyone remembers, please let me know in the response section. Thanks! The second thing he suggested was look into what the Australian government is doing, as well as his own division. And that’s exactly what I did. There is a plethora of information found with both of these groups. Feel free to peruse at your leisure.
You will find links to Guidelines for the Use of AI, Citing Your Sources of AI, AI Principles, and When Do I Use AI, all as printable PDF’s. I plan on using them as a template to create our own Chief Paskwa guidelines. Here are some samples of what you’ll find.
Digital Literacy and the Use of AI in Education
And at the British Columbia Government website you will find links to Materials for school boards, district leaders, teachers, and staff, Materials for teachers, Materials for students and Materials for parents and caregivers, all as printable PDF’s. I plan on using them as a template to create our own Chief Paskwa guidelines. Here are some samples of what you’ll find.
As for the Australian Government, check out Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Schools. It has a document that explains what Gen AI is, it’s purpose and audience, the design of the framework, opportunities and risks, and it’s six guiding principles, along with a quick glance poster, shown below.
I would also check out this link Using AI Tools in Your Studies. It offers a guide that will help students understand how to use AI tools effectively, while still following the rules.
This is a lot to take in I know. So when I asked Chris Kennedy where to start, I suggest these links are where one might want to go. Also, just keep Googling. There’s a lot out there. Happy exploring!
