SaskAbilities Council

“There is no greater disability in society, than the inability to see a person as more” – Robert M. Hensel

April 2019 I got hired on at SaskAbilities Council as a Support Worker. They run a program called HUB (Helping you Be, Become, Belong) for adults with varying disabilities. HUB Program is Monday-Friday, 8:30-4. We have roughly 80 participants come each week & we run different activities all day long. Activities include fun science experiments, cooking, cleaning, learning about the weather, bingo, arts/crafts, democracy, goal setting, current events & so much more. We also do ‘Outings’ where one of us staff take 3-4 participants out in the community for an activity. Common activities that we do are swimming, Cat Cafe, movie, volunteering, seniors dance, jewellery making, out for lunch & more.

SaskAbilities has been one of the best things that has ever happened to me. One of the biggest things I have learned is that people with disabilities are not as limited to doing things as society may make them out to be. They are capable of doing so much more than I ever expected. They have some of the best sense of humours & kindest hearts I know. I always come into work smiling & I leave work feeling so fulfilled from them. This job has taught me so much about inclusiveness & brought me desire to work in an inclusive ed classroom. Each participant has set goals for themselves & majority of them have an end goal of getting a paid job one day. In our goal setting sessions, we sit with them & talk about the next steps they need to work on in order to fufill this goal of theirs. Many of them are so dedicated to their goals, that it inspires me to always be working just as hard on my own goals too.
