Knitting Journey: Motivation is Hard to Come By

Knitting can be quite a tedious task, especially when you are not used to doing it. Over the past couple weeks I have drastically slowed down on my knitting and am finding it mighty chore to do. This is not the best thing as I am trying to complete a sweater before the end of this course, so now I have a lot of catching up to in order to finish. Yes it is possible to finish, but I have decided that it is okay if I don’t as long as I genuinely gave it a chance and tried. This is by no means me trying to give up or quit, but I want to give myself a little slack on this one thing so I can focus on more important things (like the blog posts). I’m still working my way through it and am really proud of my progress. As long as when I am done with this project I feel like I have learned and improved I feel like this will be a success, its not the completion of the sweater that matters, but the process of learning the skill that matters.

This is where I am currently, which I know isn’t a lot of a difference from before, but I see the progress and that is what is important. It has also been great to explore the knitting community on places like Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube. I have found awesome content creators and am even in a knitting and crochet group and Facebook. I’ve discovered that fiber arts is an amazing community of people.

  1. I really appreciate the honesty of your post as this was one of my concerns with this assignment as well. With all we have going on, I can totally relate to how challenging it is to justify or find the motivation. I love how you have been kind to yourself and adapted your goal to match reality rather than adding pressure. You’re doing an amazing job!

  2. Hi Jenna!
Honestly, a perfection mindset has held me back many times. I think it is better to accept a different outcome and continue trying and learning as opposed to giving up. They say that most brain cells are created when you fail and have to think about how to solve the problem. The sweater looks dope.

  3. Your sweater is looking great, Jenna! I think it’s normal to feel the lack of motivation – especially with knitting because it’s so repetitive! Your progress is fantastic so far!

  4. Hi Jenna, I thought I’d pop by your blog again to see how your knitting project has been going. First off, your sweater is looking great so far and I like the colour. Secondly, I appreciate your honesty and sharing the struggle of feeling stuck. I chose to do crochet for my project this semester and although knitting and crocheting have their differences they also share some similarities. One thing I learned this semester from multiple videos on both YouTube and TikTok is that when you first start crochet/knitting a big project (like your sweater) may be exciting to start, but can often lead to losing motivation due to the length of the project. I was stuck in the same boat as you for a couple weeks of my learning project and would take breaks. That being said, do not give up and I wish you all the best on your knitting journey!

  5. Hi Jenna,
My learning project was also learning to knit and let me tell you, struggling with motivation was a challenge I had throughout the semester. I found with having a full-time teaching position it was difficult to find the motivation to work on my project after a long day at work. I found I had to set aside time specifically for this project instead of working on it when I felt the urge (which was never). I guess you never know what is going to motivate you! Keep up the great work!
