Writing the Normal Narratives – socioeconomic status

    I)               I never really thought about socioeconomic status until my experiences in u in my ECS 101 and ECS 102 class. A particular normative narrative for me is middle to upper class. In Cassi’s story she talks about having friends over and they would mention her “big house”. I also experienced a familiar experience as her. I am from white city and so, when I would tell people that they would already assume I came from a place with money.  Cassi also stated that she would take “The simple things for granted, such as having food on the table and not wondering about when my family and I would…

    Little Princess

I was 6 years old and it was a chilly Saturday morning in April. I head upstairs with excitement because I know I have dance competitions all day. My mom is opening the widows welcoming spring into the house air. She feeds me a big breakfast that includes protein and calcium. Then she drags her heavy feet to her purse and makes sure she had a 20-dollar bill for the entry fee. I quickly finish my breakfast and throw my dishes into the sink because I am egger to start the day. My mom meets me in her master bathroom and throws a rough towel over the chair where I…

    Christmas Dinner

It was my first day of internship at an Elementary School for my University class. I remember it was a nice day the snow was finally melting. I leave my home in White City to go get gas it was around 1.60 per liter. I drove to the north area of Regina with my bought coffee and meet up with my class friend before entering the school. The red brick on the outside of the school was faded and the green paint of the door was chipped off in areas. My friend and I walk into the school and were surprised to see how many cultural posters were hanging on…

    Discussion Provocation #2

Systemic racism does exist in Canada many white people believe that they are superior over other races because their skin colour. Denying that racism exists will continue inequality. Racial inequality impacts different nationalities that can impact historic oppression and prejudices. A good white person is still racist if they are not doing anything other than being nice.  Racism and race are still an issue in society because people will see diversity and create an opinion on a race only based on the actions of some people in that race. This can have negative affects because it creates people to have prejudice against that race. Police brutality against Black and Indigenous…

    Week 2:

As a child, skin colour was never something I would ask about or acknowledge. I feel like I almost never noticed when someone had different skin colour then me. My best friend throughout Elementary and High School was black so, it was just normal to me. I started to notice we had different coloured skin in high school because people felt the need to point it out. We would go out to the mall and people of all skin colours would be giving us a confusing look, it was like they were thinking why is a white and black person hanging out. In school we learned about Canadian history and…

    Week One:

A loud high-pitched ring vibrates throughout my ears. I rub sleep from my eyes and reach to turn off the noise. I carry my heavy legs out of my silk sheets and place them on the cold floor. I walk to my closet and pick out an old rough pair of denim jeans. Then I slide all the clothes to one side and pick out a white t-shirt from the back. I put my hair into a low messy bun, change and go upstairs to say good morning to my family. I grab my jeep keys and then reach for the door knob; the front door creaked as I pushed…
