TECHNOLOGY: IMPACT ON A SUCCESSFUL CLASSROOM LEARNING
To the benefit of this discourse, the resources that have made this task possible and enabled my rapid submission are my computer, the Internet, and access to online literature. The advent and adoption of technology to support learning in the classroom will improve learning outcomes and skills exponentially instead of downhill. Growing up, technology for me was a farce. So, if someone had told me 10 years ago that I would be able to explore technology the way I am now, I wouldn’t have believed them. Perhaps it could have taken place in more developed parts of the world outside of Africa. Not only Africa, but much of the world is now experiencing it in different dimensions and percentages.
Technology has helped in the globalization of the world and is evolving daily leading to significant changes in communication, transportation, education, the economy and all aspects of life generally. These changes, make people rely on computers, smartphones, social media platforms, and the internet to communicate and access information, use airlines to travel faster, and develop machinery with greater efficiency and precision with fewer resources. Therefore, leads to a faster-paced, interconnected, and more efficient way of life.
However, the focus of this blog post is how technology enhances classroom learning. Evidently, technology benefits classroom learning in various ways through the use of interactive software, videos, and simulations that help students stay focused and interested in the material making learning engaging for students. Not only does it help students alone but teachers also get to personalize students learning experiences by using adaptive software that can adjust the difficulty of questions based on a student’s performance, and online assessments can provide instant feedback and help teachers identify areas where students need more help. These aid teacher and students’ collaboration because learning doesn’t stop in the classroom it continues even remotely online. Technology has made it possible to create immersive learning experiences using augmented and virtual reality. This technology can transport students to places they might not otherwise be able to visit, such as historical sites, outer space or under the ocean.
Education and technology have a close relationship, and technology has had a significant impact on the way we teach and learn. I teach in preschool and trust me those kids between 2-6 years old can navigate technology in ways that I couldn’t when I was 10. Maybe it’s because I grew up in a developing nation where 5-7 hours of power supply a day was seen as a luxury.
Learning online, therefore, makes students access to a wealth of information through digital libraries and other online resources that can help students learn more about a wide range of topics. It helps prepare students for the future because technology isn’t going anywhere soon. Technology is an integral part of modern life, and using it in the classroom can help prepare students for the future. By using technology to learn, students can develop the skills they will need to succeed in this digital age.
However, the benefits of technology have also come with challenges, such as the potential for addiction and information overload, and the need to manage the environmental impacts of technological development. This is why teachers must guide students’ learning by showing them how to use technology thoughtfully and intentionally. Also putting it at the back of their minds that students’ access to technology isn’t equal, it’s important to ensure that any technology used in the classroom doesn’t exacerbate existing inequalities.
Arising from the foregoing, while technology can be a valuable tool in education, it is important to utilize it thoughtfully and intentionally. Technology should never replace the role of teachers in guiding students learning and it is also pertinent to ensure that every technology used in education is accessible to all students. As John Dewey once said, “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.” The technology we have at our fingertips can help teachers become memorable teachers of tomorrow. Thus, it is pertinent for teachers and students to adapt to this revolutionary form of learning because it fosters ease, access to billions of learning resources, and increases productivity. This critically appraises the impact technology has towards learning.
Hi JR, great post! I appreciated your blog post as I am interested in how people in other countries live and manage similar experiences. It is difficult to understand how technology has benefitted people in other countries as I have only lived in Canada. I also appreciated the quote from John Dewey. It lent some perspective to the important question of how to best use technology in the classroom. You also discussed the many ways technology can enhance learning and how teachers can use technology to differentiate instruction. To me the question is HOW can technology be used to enhance learning. The question of SHOULD technology be used is no longer relevant.
“Not only does it help students alone but teachers also get to personalize students learning experiences by using adaptive software that can adjust the difficulty of questions based on a student’s performance, and online assessments can provide instant feedback and help teachers identify areas where students need more help.”
Jolaoluwa, I think this is something that stands out for me as well, and I wonder if the new AI technology can significantly help in this area. I find it time consuming to rewrite questions to tailor to each student and their learning experience. Yet, I know that some of my assignments are too difficult or too easy for some students. But, with thirty students in a class, four classes a day, this becomes difficult. I was playing around on ChatGPT and I asked it to adapt a set of question to be easier. It wasn’t perfect, but it did a totally reasonable job of adapting the questions. I can see myself using this regularly as it will save a significant amount of time, and allow me to meet and challenge students at the level they are at. This could be so beneficial in the classroom!
Hi JR! Great post. I always appreciate your insights in class as you bring a very different viewpoint from my own experience and it is a good reminder of the fact that how we view education and technology in North America is different than how many other countries experience it around the world. I especially appreciate your quote from Dewey, “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.” What a great way to not only think about tech but about pedagogy. Thanks for the post and for sharing in class.
