The concept of curriculum that I have decided to talk about is Life Writing, the reason why I chose to write about this certain concept is I think it has a lot of importance when it comes to student reflections. The author of the article I have found goes into a lot of detail about what “distance learning” and “distance education” are. She talks about how students are learning about concepts in class, and she has used the life writing concept as a way for students to self-evaluate themselves.
Although some schools are very stuck on the ideas of tests and learning outcomes throughout a semester, teachers are using learning journals as a way to prompt students into reflecting on what they have learnt. Life writing has been seen as a practice that people only think is something that English arts classes will do to express how they are learning. The reason why I mention that is that many other subjects such as history or health can also use life writing as a way to work through the material and see that all the students are understanding what is happening in the class.
Now that I have done some exploring into what life writing is and how it can be used I need to narrow down what I would like to talk about in my first assignment. Something that I would like to further research is how life writing and the curriculum can work together in ways of reflecting student’s personal goals for a class. when looking at life writing, I’ve found that teachers are putting too much emphasis on writing about the class instead of it being a free writing exercise. I would like to further my understanding of why life writing is important in other subjects and not just English arts and other writing-dominated classes.
