New App, Better Learning

For testing out a new app there were various I could use. I tried out a few given to us like Skitch and Educreations, but they weren’t working in a way to benefit my learning with ASL.

So, I finally found an ASL app; thanks to one of the shared Learning Projects we had. The ASL App seemed most fitting for me

to get to learn how to use, and still learn more ASL at the time. As any learning app for new languages turns out being; free to a certain extent. I found what I wanted to learn about ASL was available for me on the app, as seen in the photo on the right. Since the alphabet has become easier for me to remember, I skipped that lesson and decided to move to numbers. I found this concept exciting and important for me to learn, as I hope to become a future math teacher.

The signs for numbers aren’t awfully that hard. Although with this app, it is nice that they give the option to slow down the video, so you can follow at a speed where you can look and adjust your fingers where needed. The numbers went up to about 100 and then went into currency (money), a very useful tool in the real world.

Overall I would give this app about an 8/10, I think the idea of this app is exceptional. Although, their only downfall is that it makes for a paid prescription to get access to certain concepts. For a language that I believe is very important to learn at some point in someone’s life, especially as an educator, all concepts should be available for free.

If I were to use this app in the classroom for a specific ASL lesson, I could easily use a tool to share my screen and involve the class altogether. As an app, it also would allow kids to download the app and practice on their own in the class. In doing it individually for students there is a risk that students would not follow directions and use their phones for unuseful purposes.
