Shakshouka!

Once again, this week I used TikTok again… I found a different creator for a recipe but there are honestly lots of creators I could’ve used for this recipe as there is many different versions of it. This week I made a Northern African and Middle Eastern dish called Shakshouka. Like the other recipes I found on TikTok, I have seen this dish pop up on my For You Page many times! I always thought it looked delicious and filling. This was the perfect opportunity to try it out! For this recipe, I found the TikTok creator Moribyan, who has 5.2 million followers. Her page is a cooking page with many delicious recipes and international dishes. This recipe did not have measurements, but I feel like you do not need them as you can just eyeball it for your own personal tasting and amount you are making. Shakshouka is typically eaten around breakfast or lunch.

Something you should know about me is I sometimes get the ick when eating eggs… I struggle eating plain eggs, so when I eat them they often have to be mixed into a sandwich, wrap, or sauce. I think it is the texture that throws me off sometimes and the thought of eating eggs! This is another reason why I wanted to try out this dish. This dish had a sauce that the eggs cooked in which made them flavourful and hidden. I can say that I did not get the ick while eating the eggs in this dish!

Here are the steps I took:

I started by mincing fresh. I added oil, minced garlic, and tomato paste to a pan.

I diced tomatoes.

I diced purple onion. I added the tomatoes and onions into the pan. Let that cook down for a couple of minutes.

Next, I added some water to thin the sauce out. I added garlic powder, garlic salt, basil, crushed red pepper flakes, and parsley to the sauce. You can add whatever spices you enjoy! In some other recipes I have found add cumin, paprika, and more!

Crack however many eggs you want straight into the sauce. Cover with a lid to allow the eggs to cook.

Cook the eggs to your preference (I prefer them runny). Enjoy!

Shakshouka is served with bread. I toasted mine and added butter and garlic seasoning. You can either eat straight from the pan by dipping the bread into the eggs and sauce or portioning it into a bowl like I did!

I enjoyed eating shakshouka a lot as it was very flavorful, savoury, and filling! It also didn’t require any crazy expensive ingredients as well! This dish was also very easy to make and very quick! I was a little scared to try something I had never made or eaten before because I was scared I would waste it if I didn’t enjoy it! However, I was pleasantly surprised with the final result of this dish. This dish probably took me about 10-15 minutes from start to finish. The hardest part was cutting the vegetables. It was super easy to make and is a great beginner dish for people to try! I also get sick of eating the same breakfast food such as pancakes, bacon, and toast. This dish is a great way to switch up your breakfast for a savoury and filling option! I hope you all get to try out this dish for yourselves!
