ECS 101

For my first-ever field placement, I had the privilege of attending Wilfred Hunt Elementary School!

The past four weeks of my field placement have taught me valuable lessons that I will take with me as I continue my education to become a teacher. I was able to see education from a different perspective, which is important in my journey from high school student to pre pre teacher. Even though I was not a part of Wilfred Hunt for very long, the weeks that I spent in the classroom were unforgettable. The relationships that I was able to build with these students will forever have a place in my heart.

I had a few great experiences sitting and working one-on-one with students and connecting in such a beautiful way. One student in particular was really struggling with his math and was basically starting to have a mental breakdown. Together, we took some deep breaths and talked about how hard math can be sometimes, but instead of saying he can’t do it, he should tell himself, I can try my very best. You know what? He did try his very best with my help by his side. He did such a wonderful job and started understanding really well. I learned that sometimes students just need a little more encouragement and a push to know they can do anything if they put their mind to it. These moments really do give you another reason to know you’re in the right career.

A student in my grade 1 and 2 class gave me this drawing with a bunch of hearts all around the page with lines connecting them. I asked her what she drew out of curiosity. Her response was, “Miss Harris. I drew you hearts connecting together because now our hearts are connected forever. You made today so exciting and fun, and I wanted you to always remember me.” Now if this doesn’t give you the biggest smile, I don’t know what will. This particular student truly made my experience so unforgettable, and I’m very glad I had the privilege to be a part of Wilfred Hunt.
