From Divots to Decent: Getting Comfortable With The Iron

I have been really starting to fall in love with golfing, these are words that I never thought would come out of my mouth. It has been a real rollercoaster  ride but I am proud of where I am now. My goal for this week had been to really focus on my shots with my iron. I also planned to try and go to the driving range a few more times that I did last week. My goal was to go 4 times but I have only made it there 3 times. Normally I would look at this as defeat or a setback but sometimes things come up and that’s just the reality of life. On the bright side I went one additional time than I did last week! This coming week I plan on getting to the driving range 4 times once again, but this time I have much more motivation to complete my challenge.

I golfed twice this week and participated in something I have never tried before which was a scramble. A scramble is a game that you can play against another person or another pair. The way it works is that you both tee off from the start of the hole. Once you have both it you then get to strategize and decide which of your two balls you’d rather play from. You will then both play from there. The goal of the game is to have the lowest number of shots to get the ball in the hole and have a lower score than the competing pair. I really enjoyed it because it is very fun to play with friends and I highly recommend it.

This week I learned how to properly hit an iron by learning through YouTube shorts. This is my preferred way of learning as it gives you all you need to know in a short amount of time. It allows me to come up with cue words to remember as I am hitting my iron. The video I watched was from TopSpeedGolf.

Overall I thought his video was super easy to follow along with and I love how he demonstrated every movement that he was talking about. The key tips that I took away from his video were to always start in an athletic stance, standing with your feet shoulder width apart and having a slight bend in your knees. The next tip was to hinge your upper body down until you are looking at the ball. What helps me is to feel as though I am rolling my hips forward almost like they are rotating to the ground. In the video he emphasizes not letting yourself roll your shoulders or have a hunched back. The next tip is to shift your weight to your back foot. This will make it so that you feel as though you are behind the golf ball. The last top is that you should feel like your arms are hanging straight down before you finally hit the ball.

I honestly really love this video. He keeps it short and sweet while teaching you all you need to know when you are just starting out. I have never been very confident in hitting any other club but my driver but I am already feeling so much better about all my iron shots.

Stay tuned for next week when I focus on technique for hitting my 7 wood!
