Cybersleuthing my Sister!
I decided to cybersleuth my sister. My Sisters name is Kaibrie Lumbard so I started off by simply just searching up her name. The first thing that I was looking for was if I could find out her age and where she is from. The first post that popped up was from a site called gems pro. Kaibrie went to Canada Games for swimming so Gems pro shares a lot about the athlete. Her age, her height, the town she is from and even her weight was listed without even having to enter the site. I found this a little worrying considering I did not even have to look hard at all to find out these very personal details. By skimming through all of the articles and apps and accounts that pop up when I searched Kaibrie’s name I was able to tell that she was a very good swimmer and talented at her sport.
The next thing that I was on the hunt for was to try and find anything about Family. In the second website I was able to find my name with all of my information as well. It was again another Gems Pro site. I kept on scrolling down looking through all of the sites and second to the bottom I found one from the Lloydminster Bobcats Hockey Team. It had both of my parents’ names along with Kaibrie’s, mine and my 2 other brothers’ names and ages. So far I have been able to find out a lot of personal information about Kaibrie that I would not have imagined would be so easy and accessible to find.
The next two topics I wanted to try and find out about Kaibrie was the accounts she has and if through them I could find her likes/ dislikes. I found that Kaibrie has instagram, Vsco, and Pinterest. Her Instagram was private which was good in my opinion but vsco on the other hand is not private. There is not even an option to have your pictures private, it is open for everyone to see. Since I was able to find the social media apps she has I wanted to try to find out if I could see what she likes/dislikes. I went and looked at her link to her Pinterest account where it took me straight to her Pinterest boards. For this who do not know Pinterest, you can make specific boards of the things that interest you and save them to different boards. Kaibrie has three boards, the first one being all pins. On this board I could interpret that she really loves baking and cooking. She has lots of different recipe ideas saved. The other two boards that she has are Christmas and art. It is crazy that through one app I was able to tell what interest my sister has, and I can personally speak in the fact that those three topics are ones she really likes.
Through searching Kaibrie’s name I honestly think she has a good digital footprint. Nothing super worrying came up and all of the ideas and information that I could find were simply just information on her life. I would say that the one app that could have a negative impact is Vsco. She does not have anything super bad posted but possibly something to consider double checking before she applies for another job in the future.
Through doing this I was very surprised with all of the information I could find about my sister so easily. It honestly scared me a bit because just like the videos that we were assigned to watch in class such as “The Prince of Shame”, which talked about cyber vigilantism. After viewing that video it really made me reflect on how careful you really have to be on the internet . It really can be a dangerous and scary place when not being taught how to be properly safe online. This is not something that will be going away as our world continues to advance so I really do see an importance in properly teaching kids how to be safe online.
I was able to find one really good source online called “Raising Cyber-Smart Kids”. It is a YouTube video put out by Tedx Talks lead by Arthi Vasudevan.
And She speaks on the importance of teaching kids how to be aware online from a young age. I believe that this is a resource that ties in perfectly with our class and backs up the ideas on cyber vigilantism. I would highly recommend for anyone to give this video a watch to expand even further your knowledge on cyber vigilantism and safety online.
