New Goals, New Swings
This past week has been a great one. I really cannot believe that we are already at the end of the spring semester and writing my second last learning project post. Throughout the past few weeks I have learned a lot about myself. I learned that and solidified the fact that I learn best through videos and demonstrations. Secondly, I learned how great of a game golf can be. Even through all of the technique and practice it can still be frustrating at times, but in the end it is a great sport. Third and finally, I learned that I really can do whatever I put my mind to. As long as I am willing to put in the time and effort, I am capable of great things. I am extremely proud of what I have accomplished so far and I am taking this project as a beginning point. I am not even close to the golfer that I dream of being, but I have started and that is the hardest part. I plan on continuing to golf throughout the summer and building on my technique that I have now.
Finally Reaching My Goals
Last week I set a goal for myself to go to the driving range four times and I am proud to announce that I did it! I will not lie, there were moments in the mornings when I really did not feel like getting up. I pushed through and got myself there to reach my goal. I truthfully do not mind going to the driving range. I feel as though a lot of golfers do not really enjoy it and more so want to go play a round of golf instead. I am the total opposite. Going to the driving range takes off the pressure of hitting the ball perfectly every time for a beginner like myself. I get stressed out when I play in front of people so I really do enjoy going to the driving range and hitting balls with myself in the morning. This week my focus was to learn how to hit my 7 wood club. This is by far my favorite club in my bag. The brand of it is Callaway and they named it “Big Bertha” so whenever I want to use that club to hit a shot I call it that.
My Learning Source From This Week
This week for my last online learning source I decided to use tik tok. Surprisingly, I have not gone and used it in any of my past weeks up till now, so I thought it was about time. I wanted to start off by sharing a video I found that explains a 7 wood to everyone who does not know exactly what it is. I thought this video was good but one aspect of it that bothered me was the audio. I felt it was hard to hear over the wind in the background, so that is one thing that I would have changed. In the video he explains how a 7 wood has a bit shorter of a shaft. This allows you to feel much closer to the ball. He also talks about the loft on the blade of the club. Loft on a club can really help a lot of golfers which is a great design feature of this club.
It took me a while to find a good beginner video teaching me how to actually hit a 7 wood on tik tok, but after scrolling for a while and possibly getting off topic a few times I found one. I thought this video from Taylor made Golf was perfect because the guys gave me a few basic tips to think about when learning how to hit this club. Again, I am not looking for perfection or expecting to have the proper technique from the beginning but more so focusing on finding a good starting point.
My Takeaways From This Week
The first point that I took away was to have my grip slightly down on the club shaft and not quite at the top. This will help with having control of the club into the swing. The next point that I took away was to have the ball lined up with the inside heel of my front foot. This is to make sure I get the most power out of my shot. The third tip that I learned was to feel as though I am brushing the grass and not hitting down. I feel as though this is a common mistake I find myself making with a few different clubs I have learned so far. The last thing that you want to do with this club is to take a divot behind the ball. In the video his last point that he mentions is to have a bit of a hip swing. When I was reflecting and trying to execute this pointer in my practices I was struggling. I started confusing myself and either overdoing the hip swing by opening my body too much or not doing it at all. I decided to drop that point and forget about it. I know that I already have a good grasp on that concept and found something that works for me so I decided to just focus on the first three points.
My Overall Rating
Overall I really liked this video. It did not make me feel too overwhelmed and that is a common thing I am looking for when finding new sources to learn from. I am really glad I found this video and would recommend it to anyone that wants to try picking up a 7 wood and giving it a swing!
