Blog Post 7: Progressive Education

Progressive education is very much the opposite of traditional education, but it’s been very hard to implement and make changes to the current education system. John Dewey is part of the progressive education movement and in the reading for progressive education, he goes in-depth about the changes we could be making, why, and the relation to a global context. Relating progressive education globally, we are seeing the rise of many different naturalist studies being implemented in schools (as well as expressive art). these new areas are being introduced due to the knowledge being gained about what we should be teaching and how.

Education in relation to global context shows us that the methods of teaching many schools use aren’t working for students anymore as many are not preparing for factory work (which is what traditional school has been preparing us for) but to be prepared for many different jobs (such as going into more of your arts and music). this change in education is inevitable whether traditionalists want to change or not as the entire world is changing constantly, with the biggest help that John Dewey located being the use of computers/tech within classrooms. It was also found that loosening our rigid structures is what we should be doing now as many parents are struggling to find options for their students and homeschooling becoming much wider in use with there being no change in education.

Building upon this we can see how this is a very contemporary democratic approach as it gives the students choices on how they want to go about school, as well as giving them some decisions as many of the traditionalist views only allow the teachers/people in power to make the decisions whereas progressive schooling is giving power to the students
