Hi there! My name is Karrah Derenisky, and I am a first year elementary education student at the University of Regina. I am a very passionate person about helping others learn in the best way possible for them. Over the years, I have learned that every single day matters to a child. They see how you treat them and others, they hear how you talk, and they see how you react, and they feel how much of a difference you make. Teachers can make the biggest difference in someone’s life, and possibly inspire them to do certain things. I was inspired by many people to become a teacher, and I want to make a difference in someone’s life the way certain teachers made in mine.
I have always been an active person. Throughout my life I played many sports and was always on the go with something. I was able to learn how to do my studies while also participating in extra curricular activities. Physical education and sports got me through some of my toughest times. I know first hand how physical exercise can have a bug affect on mental health. I have struggled with mental health for a long time, and I want to be able to share my story and coping strategies with my students one day. Physical education and exercise is a big part of my life, and I want my students to learn to love it in different ways. Not only do I want to become a teacher, but I also hope to be a coach one day.
I have many volunteer experiences that have also helped shape who I am and why I am so passionate about mental health and becoming a teacher. Throughout high school career I was a member of the SRC, and eventually became Co-President in my grade 12 year. That was an experience I will forever hold close to me, as I got to experience and listen to people’s stories. I was able to be the voice for the students of the school, when maybe they couldn’t use their voice. I was also a Student Trustee for the Regina Catholic School Board for three years and a half years from 2017-2020. This is another experience that inspired me and will help me when I do become a teacher. I was able to be a voice for one of the four catholic high schools in Regina. I advocated for what students needed, I used my voice so that we were heard, and I made a difference. Not only did I meet with trustees once a month, but I was able to meet with the Minister of Education and Opposition a few times. Again, my team made the issues within the school systems known and we advocated for better services. One of those services was a mental health service. The education system needs better mental health services, we know that, but they need to hear it from students as well. It is my hope that we will eventually see change, and I will continue to advocate for it until it happens.
Things are not easy with Covid-19 right now, I think we all know that. But in times like this, we all need to rally behind each other and support one another. I see you. I see you everyday working so hard to make the life of a child a little better. We will get through this together as one!
