All students, including those with disabilities and other special needs, are educated in regular classrooms with their same age peers in schools in the community they live in
All means ALL. All students
People with disabilities should be supported to live their lives as similar as possible to those of their own age who do not have disabilities
Inclusion happens at the classroom level. It requires a major transformation of existing systems
“Although schools often advocate multiculturalism and acceptance of differences, disability and ableism are often overlooked in this advocacy.” I agree with this 100%. Many times you do not see the advocacy in a school unless they have a segregated classroom or integrated classrooms. There is not enough advocacy for those with disabilities. On top of that, there are not enough education assistants to help support those students.
Some questions to think about:
If our jobs as teachers is to meet the need of all students and have high expectations for all students, why is inclusivity still a problem in schools? Why are people still fighting for advocacy for disabilities and ableism? Why doesn’t the government show more support and advocate as well?
