Teaching Safe Online Habits

June 4, 2024 1 By Kate Johnson

I plan to approach digital citizenship in my future classroom by teaching the students how to safely use digital tools/platforms, respect others online (be kind online), and understand the impact and consequences of their online actions. Digital citizenship includes digital literacy, etiquette, online safety, and knowing and understanding digital laws and rights. To encourage responsible digital use, I will set clear expectations, lead by example in modelling appropriate behaviour, and foster classroom discussions about online behaviour. Additionally, I aim to provide support and resources to the students to ensure equal access to technology.

I would teach the nine elements of digital citizenship by incorporating them into the curriculum. The nine elements are:
1- Digital access
2- Digital commerce
3- Digital communication and collaboration
4- Digital etiquette
5- Digital fluency
6- Digital health and welfare
7- Digital law
8- Digital rights and responsibility
9- Digital security and privacy

Incorporating the nine elements into the classroom includes ensuring that the students have equal access to technology, teaching safe practices for online purchases, encouraging respectful online interactions and appropriate online behaviour, fostering critical thinking and digital literacy skills, encourage students to be mindful of their screen time, educating students on digital laws and responsibilities, instilling the importance of respecting digital rights, and teaching students about protecting personal data.

Teaching students about online safety and how to protect themselves online, like their personal safety, and digital etiquette, such as being kind online and using credible sources, will help them in their futures. Using relatable scenarios can show students the consequences of online actions. Incorporating hands-on activities in the class can help students better understand how to use technology ethically, leading to class discussions about digital citizenship. Utilizing these methods in the classroom can help develop an understanding of how to navigate the digital world. Incorporating the nine elements into the curriculum, using real-world scenarios, hands-on activities/projects, and class discussions would help the students gain a better understanding of being responsible digital citizens.
