Carl Leggo

When starting my research for assignment #1, I came across an individual that caught my attention. Carleton Derek Leggo, also known as Carl Leggo, is a school professor and a poet. Carl is from Corner Brook, Newfoundland, where he started his teaching career. Leggo specialized in the department of Language and Literacy Education. He taught at the University of British Columbia starting in 1990, for undergraduate and graduate courses.

Many remember Carl by his “Leggo phenomenon”, as he spoke with such intimacy while readings his works. He has led by example to new and current scholars, after demonstrating his impressive repertoire with his additions to, “Canadian curriculum studies, narrative and poetic inquiry, life writing, autobiography, teacher education, and arts-based research” (The University of British Columbia, 2022). Throughout Leggo’s career, he received many awards of achievements due to his high interest in doing good in the world. Many students and colleagues will forever see Carl Leggo as a mentor based off his excitement to learn and teach for the wellbeing of others. I found a quote that stated, “education lived in Carl” (The University of British Columbia, 2022), and I believe that this is an obvious assumption after hearing all the work that Leggo has put into the education system. With no other intention than finding the best opportunities for all students, an individual like Carl Leggo is an inspiration to future educators, such as myself. This is the type of difference that I one day hope to make in the education system. I believe it is important to learn about people like Carl Leggo, to understand how we can help our future students.

While I continue with my assignment, I would love to dive deeper into Carl’s eminent awards, understanding why he got them, and how he did it. I can see that education was a priority in Carl Leggo’s life, and I am interested to learn more about him. Educator’s that have created a difference in this world, are so important. I hope to find other scholars that have also created this much of an impact on the education system.

  1. Hey Kaylie, I really enjoyed your article. When you say, “Educator’s that have created a difference in this world, are so important” (Kaylie, 2023), I find a sense of inspiration here from Carl Leggo. Is there a way we can use Carl Leggo and other scholars’ research as a way to make all education more impactful across the world? Lastly, I admire the strong influence to see how great minds work, which you shown in your text: “… I would love to dive deeper into Carl’s eminent awards, understanding why he got them, and how he did it” (Kaylie, 2023). Is there a sense to replicate the motivation of carl leggo?

Thank you very much for your time writing this post,

  2. I like that you believe in his ability to help future students. I think you should have covered the Leggo phenomenon in more detail! Your summary covered everything else in such great detail!
