Citizenship

This week has changed my understanding on Citizenship. I have always had my own understanding but this week’s lecture, podcast and video helped expand my knowledge on the term. Before this week my understanding was simply a relationship between an individual and the place that they come from but it is much deeper than that. After this week I have a new understanding. I now realize realize that citizenship is about how us as citizens view and respect where we come from. For example, where we come from gives us benefits like education , healthcare, and human rights. Being a citizen is having responsibility to support where you come from. Learning about different citizenships and where other people come from made me realize how important it is that we learn from other people and where they come from. Being a good citizen can be as simple as giving to the less fortunate or helping out the youth in the community is another great example of what good citizenship is.

The classroom is a great place to practice citizenship. When I think of Treaty Education I first thought about how the classroom is citizenship in itself. I believe this because citizens are supposed to respect where we come from and where we learn and the classroom it’s just that. As Canadians we all grew up on treaty land and all have a responsibility to respect and support the citizenship of Canada. We should respect and learn about the land that people fought for. We should also learn about and respect our cultural backgrounds. Which will make our classrooms and world a better place to be.
