Multilingual Students

Realistically, when we enter our future classrooms there will be many multilingual students. Where our school system goes wrong, is that some may see this as a negative factor. However, the inclusion of multilingual students, opens up a whole new window to lessons and experiences within the classroom. As educators we must understand that each student’s past learning will vary. In other words, some students will be further along, and some may not have been taught key factors. As an educator, it is my own responsibility to ensure each student is caught up, creating an equal space for all students to understand the lesson. Having many forms and techniques of learning will help these students immensely. These factors may include hands-on activities, audio books, and more. A huge factor to having multilingual students and students that come from different backgrounds, is it is important to celebrate everyone’s differences. Students feel heard and understood when we show we care. Many activities such as allowing students to share their own culture with the class, will create a safe and inclusive environment.
