The Crumb Coat

The Crumb Coat

And so the journey begins! This week i wanted to decorate a cake with only knowing a little bit of how to decorate a cake, to see how well i can actually decorate one without any practice.  To start off, i made sure i have all the right ingredients and materials to make the cake, the icing and to decorate it as well.

I first baked my cake (cake from a box) in the afternoon so it would be cool enough to decorate. In the evening it was finally time to make the icing and start decorating the cake. I wasn’t sure what type of icing worked best, so i did a quick search on the internet and found an icing to make. I found a simple butter cream icing to do, I then found a YouTube video on how to make it. I followed the youtube video on making the icing, which i  doubled the recipe of the icing to make sure i had enough for the whole cake.

After i made a big mess making the icing, it was time to decorate the cake. I found another YouTube video to fellow, i only watched the video once as i wanted to see if i was able to decorate a cake off of basic knowledge.

I learned quickly that i need to get a turned table/stand to decorate on, as it was difficult to get the crumb coat even all around the cake. Another thing i learned was to put the cake into the fridge after done the fist crumb coat because it was hard to get it all smooth which i was not able to make it look smooth. After i was done covering the cake with icing, it was time to do some piping. I used a size 18 star tip to do all the piping on the cake. I have done some piping before but nothing fancy, which i kept it simple. I was surprised how well the cake turned out, but i still have lots to learn.
