ECS 203- Reflection #4

To be a good student within the Kumashiro reading was modeled by a white and well-behaved student who would achieve their academic objectives, sit properly, obey their teachers, and adhere to academic norms. The concept of common sense separates the students who don’t meet these standards. This model causes many students to feel pressured into trying to adhere to this model of the perfect student and teachers may feel upset because a student can’t do these things.

I think that rich white students are the individuals that are privileged by this model the most. They gain from this since historically and currently, the educational system has been designed to favor those pupils over others.

Within the history of education reading, it states that throughout history that a good student’s education was based on “social, religious, and political conditions” (Painter, 1886, p.7) I found that throughout history many individuals have been negatively portrayed due to racial and social status issues throughout the curriculum. The curriculum valuing certain lifestyles over others, cause students to feel undervalued and not have a good school life.
