[Placing elementary music education: a case study of a Canadian rural music program.]: How will you, as a teacher, contribute to the sense of place for your future students?

With young children, music can be a really good tool within the classroom. I believe that through music students can develop a sense of self, express their feelings, and even learn about difficult topics that exist throughout society. As a future teacher I plan on making a space where every student will have something that they are interested in in which they can use to express themselves. I could provide drawing and colouring supplies, musical instruments, books, and a writings station.

It would be a good idea for the class to discuss the instruments’ origins and history in addition to learning to play the instruments. It is crucial for everyone to feel at ease with one another, be open to learning, and be willing to participate in the classroom.

    Hi Kelsey,
I feel music is an essential tool to utilize within the classroom, especially for younger students. Music allows students to develop a stronger sense of self and can allow for exploration through difficult topics in a safe environment. I really appreciated your point about providing every student with something they are interested in, that they can use to express themselves. I feel it is so important for students to understand the history behind the instruments they use and the music they engage with. Through good music education, students will flourish and benefit.
