Operation Sourdough
“You will choose something you want to learn and share your progress in an online space for the world to see”….no pressure.
To be honest, this project came around at the perfect time. Over the Christmas holidays, my best friend had taken on the challenge of learning to make sourdough bread. She had the good fortune of being gifted a starter, along with some handy bread-making lessons, from her mom. I, on the other hand, will be diving into this project head first with very little understanding of what I’m truly getting myself into.
What do I know about sourdough bread? Beyond the fact that it’s tasty and you need some magical starter (the contents of which I don’t honestly know), not a single thing. I will be starting from scratch, ground zero, “sourdough for dummies” level. Hence why my first Google search was “equipment needed to make sourdough”. I found this great post by Little Spoon Farm that has an extensive list of everything I’m going to need to make delicious sourdough bread. Or rock-solid balls of unleavened, depending on how this goes….but I digress. From what I’ve read, I need:
-
- sourdough starter
- kitchen scale
- glass jar
- elastic bands
- mixing bowl
- proofing bowls and covers
- dutch oven
- bread lame (fancy sourdough ninja blade)
I also have a sneaky suspicion I’m going to need a healthy dose of grace and patience…
Now that I know what I need, I’m going to start tracking down these items. Some of them I already have, I’m hoping I can find others locally, and the rest I’m sure I can find on Amazon. I also need to find out exactly how to make a sourdough starter. From what I’ve heard from other people, this is the hardest part….wish me luck!
I am doing sourdough as well! I”m at the same level as you – starting from the bottom and making my own starter. I’m hoping I can get to the point where I can make some fun sourdough recipes and put some cool designs in my bread!
That’s awesome that you’re also doing sourdough! I’ll be sure to check in to see what kind of cool recipes you’re trying!
Hi Kendra!
I’m so inspired that you are wanting to do this with absolutely no prior knowledge! That is really brave, but it will definitely be an amazing learning experience with delicious results. It’s good that your best friend has experience with making sourdough, that gives you someone to reach out to for help and support when you need it. I can’t wait to see what you create!
