Operation Sourdough

“You will choose something you want to learn and share your progress in an online space for the world to see”….no pressure.

To be honest, this project came around at the perfect time. Over the Christmas holidays, my best friend had taken on the challenge of learning to make sourdough bread. She had the good fortune of being gifted a starter, along with some handy bread-making lessons, from her mom. I, on the other hand, will be diving into this project head first with very little understanding of what I’m truly getting myself into.

Delicious homemade sourdough baked bread

What do I know about sourdough bread? Beyond the fact that it’s tasty and you need some magical starter (the contents of which I don’t honestly know), not a single thing. I will be starting from scratch, ground zero, “sourdough for dummies” level. Hence why my first Google search was “equipment needed to make sourdough”. I found this great post by Little Spoon Farm that has an extensive list of everything I’m going to need to make delicious sourdough bread. Or rock-solid balls of unleavened, depending on how this goes….but I digress. From what I’ve read, I need:

    • sourdough starter
    • kitchen scale
    • glass jar
    • elastic bands
    • mixing bowl
    • proofing bowls and covers
    • dutch oven
    • bread lame (fancy sourdough ninja blade)

I also have a sneaky suspicion I’m going to need a healthy dose of grace and patience…

Now that I know what I need, I’m going to start tracking down these items. Some of them I already have, I’m hoping I can find others locally, and the rest I’m sure I can find on Amazon. I also need to find out exactly how to make a sourdough starter. From what I’ve heard from other people, this is the hardest part….wish me luck!
