Insights on the InShot video editor app

This week I decided to use the InShot app to create a video for my learning blog. This app also has the ability to edit photos, and while I appreciate when an app can serve multiple functions, this wasn’t something I utilized. Maybe next time!

To get started

You will then be taken into the editing area of the app. InShot has a variety of different features and functions when it comes to editing videos.

Here is a list of the functions I used to create my videos:

  • Trim/Split/Cut: These basic functions of video editing were fairly easy to navigate and straightforward.
  • Audio: you can record voiceovers and insert music easily within the app.
  • Text: Text is easily added to the videos and you can adjust the amount of time it stays on the screen.
  • Volume: You can increase or decrease the sound in your video as needed. I found this particularly useful for sections that I wanted to mute and add music to.*
  • Speed: I used this feature when I was mixing my starter to speed up the process.*

* If you only want to mute or speed up a section of your video, you can split the video and apply the effects to specific sections.

STAR of the app!

  • When recording voiceovers, you can record in chunks and also delete in chunks. This is a GAME CHANGER in my books. If you’ve ever had to record a voiceover, you know the frustration of getting 90% of the way complete and then fumbling your words.

Use in the classroom (SAMR model)

Substitution: InShot could be utilized as a method of delivering instructions for tasks and assignments. Educators could create a folder of videos that students can access when they are unsure of a procedure. This would be specifically beneficial in the beginning of the school year when students are becoming familiar with signing into different websites that are often used (ie. Edsby, ReadingEggs, Mathletics).

Augmentation: Educators could create and edit short videos that help to explain difficult concepts and embed them into their Slides presentations. This not only provides clarification for students but creates an opportunity to deliver information in a way that reaches more children in the way they learn best.

Modification: Students could use InShot to create and edit videos that demonstrate their learning of topics in a variety of subjects. Creating videos in this app could also be used for collaborative learning, where students create a digital library or information where they can teach and learn from each other (ie. Jigsaw).

Redefinition: I think it would be an interesting use of the app to create digital pen-pals or learning buddies from another school or community. Students can record themselves reading a story or sharing about themselves and send the video to another student. This would provide an interesting way to expose students to the reaches of the internet and creating an opportunity for connection to others outside their community that they may not otherwise have access to.
