Spring Cleaning my Cabinets

This week I wanted to use up some ingredients hiding in my pantry. Sometimes when trying new recipes, it is easy to accumulate ingredients that you usually do not gravitate towards. After rummaging around in my pantry, I found orzo left over from the week that I made Creamy Orzo Pasta. In order to use up my left over orzo, I search on Pinterest again and found a recipe called Orzo with Mushrooms on Molly’s Home Guide.

Blog – Molly’s Home Guide

I really enjoyed exploring Molly’s blog this week. Her blog not only focuses on cooking, but also gardening and practical home tips. While following her recipe for Orzo with Mushrooms on my phone, I noticed that when my phone closed or I switched between apps, the recipe would reload at the top. This was slightly frustrating, so I ended up screenshotting photos of the recipe and following through my camera roll. Molly does have a printable option which would also be a great option. The recipe had a easy ingredient list and point from steps to follow.

Filming the Cooking Process

This week I challenged myself to film my cooking process to break out of my comfort zone and try something new! I just used my phone to film short clips and then edited them together on TikTok. I am not an active TikTok user. I only have the app so that when people send me videos on TikTok I can view them. However, I know that it is popular among students and a good way to engage with their interests.

My favourite parts of using TikTok to edit videos include:

  • premade templates to insert your videos into
  • Autocut – AI software that picks templates for you
  • Recommended audios for your content
  • Filters, transitions, and ability to add text

Once I finished editing my video on TikTok, I uploaded it as a private video, saved it to my camera roll, and then reuploaded it to YouTube shorts as a unlisted video to share with you. I found the filming process less stressful once I respected my boundaries of not wanting to hear my voice or see my face on camera.

The Results

I was really happy with how this recipe turned out and for breaking out of my comfort zone to film the process. Last time I used orzo pasta, the dish included carbs, proteins, and veggies which made it a simple one dish meal. For the Orzo with Mushrooms I paired it with sausage and peppers to round out the meal. I enjoyed this meal with my family, and I would make it again!

This looks delicious, great final photo and video! What a creative use of ingredients you already had on hand! I know I have some orzo sitting in my cupboard, so I’m going to give this a go!

This title intrigued me too and also inspired me to do the same. That must have felt good to use up some extra food instead of throwing it out, plus it looks delicious!
