Contributing to the Learning of Others

Throughout my six years of being a full time university student, I have come to dread online classes. I have found them to lack connection with my peers and authentic opportunities to collaborate. However, my experience in EDTC 300 has shifted my viewpoint. Throughout the semester, this class has fostered a welcoming community for learning and growing together. During Lectures During our online classes, I have been an active contributor in the zoom chat during large group discussions, and I have continued to contribute during small group discussions in breakout rooms. Some of my favourite breakout room conversations this semester included: discussing how Amanda Todd’s story can be a learning…

Wait… I Still Need to Cook?!

I am shocked that the semester is coming to a close already! It feels very surreal to be wrapping up this learning project. I have learned so much, but I also have so much more that I want to learn! Weekly Takeaways Week 1 – Turning up the Heat In my introduction post, I discussed my habits of avoiding cooking and falling back on girl dinners most nights of the week. I am excited to say that throughout this learning project, I found myself excited to cook multiple times a week, and found myself cooking and trying new things even when my weekly posts were completed. Week 2 – Cajun…

    Spring Cleaning my Cabinets

This week I wanted to use up some ingredients hiding in my pantry. Sometimes when trying new recipes, it is easy to accumulate ingredients that you usually do not gravitate towards. After rummaging around in my pantry, I found orzo left over from the week that I made Creamy Orzo Pasta. In order to use up my left over orzo, I search on Pinterest again and found a recipe called Orzo with Mushrooms on Molly’s Home Guide. Blog – Molly’s Home Guide I really enjoyed exploring Molly’s blog this week. Her blog not only focuses on cooking, but also gardening and practical home tips. While following her recipe for Orzo with…

    Coding with a T-Rex

My first experience with coding occurred in my first year of university. Computer science was a mandatory requirement for my business degree and I signed up for the course riddled with fear. During the first lab, the instructor informed us that we were all going to code a website from scratch. I was super nervous and felt like I knew nothing! However, the labs were very helpful and I ended the semester feelings accomplished and with a new appreciation for coding. During my internship in a Grade 6/7 classroom, my cooperating teacher introduced me to Hour of Code. The first time I saw my class engage with Hour of Code…

Teaching Digital Literacy in Middle School

We can all agree that digital literacy keeps people safe online and reduces the dangers of fake news. As social media and AI continue to advance, fake news continues to advance as well. It is more difficult than ever to distinguish what is real and what is fake online. Therefore, it is crucial to introduce and continually offer opportunities for students to enhance their digital literacy in the classroom in meaningful curricular ways. Social Studies Connections In order to create a classroom culture that promotes digital literacy, it is important that digital literacy is seen within the routines and conversations happing throughout the classroom.
