Digital Citizenship & The Classroom

Digital citizenship could be controversial within the realm of an educator.  I feel that the online world was not a topic that was focused on as much when I was a young grasshopper, it was around as I remember there being computer classes and a computer room we visited, but technology was still evolving.   there was a bit of a disconnect between the ‘real’ world and the online world, as I remember I would spend many hours on our home computer using MSN and allowing it to invoke my life for many hours talking to my friends.  After reading the article Character Education for the Digital Age by Jason Ohler, I was surprised to read that it gives the “two lives” perspective and after reading it I was a little more shocked this perspective had mentioned that technology does not belong in the classroom. In my opinion, based on my experience and having been in a classroom both as a student and assistant,  I don’t think that this notion is realistic or beneficial to students or our society.

“One Life” Perspective & Dual Digitalism Can it be done?

Another lens mentioned within the article is the “one life” perspective. Through this, we can recognize that it’s our responsibility as educators to help our students understand our digital world and bring them as much knowledge as we can with respecting boundaries.   This perspective encourages us to bring together both our digital and physical lives, with believing there is no separating between both worlds. I feel the common misconception there is is that as humans we are not able to have both of those elements work in harmony, but in Nathan Jurgenson’s article “The IRL Fetish” He discusses the possibilities to exist in both worlds.  As future educators, it is unrealistic for us to expect our studStudents sitting around with different devices ents to be completely unplugged from technology, when in reality we as educators do not even do that. we often will find our cellphones on us, or require computers and technology to help us teach our classrooms, as life goes on it is coming next to impossible to stray away from digital imprints.

The 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship & How to Incorporate Them into the Classroom

This policy planning guide is based on The Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship by Mike Ribble, which include; along with ways to incorporate them into education.

  1. Digital Etiquette – Having discussions about appropriate ways to conduct yourself on the internet, ensuring they are developmentally appropriate.
  2. Digital Access – Facilitating discussion on who has access to certain platforms and that even if we think things are private they are not.
  3. Digital Law – Understanding rules stating within the digital world, and reviewing the outcomes of things such as cyberbullying, sexting, etc.
  4. Digital Communication & Collaboration – Discuss that technology has the ability to create many different perspectives, and it is important to be mindful what you say on the internet.  Whether that is Facebook, TikTok, etc.
  5. Digital Literacy – Teach students about different credible sources, and teach them to reference two or more sources.
  6. Digital Commerce – Educate students on scams and fraud, and what they might look like online, Marketplaces, banking online, etc
  7. Digital Rights & Responsibilities – Teaching students that they are responsible for thier online digital profiles, and they have the right to privacy, and they need to stay protected.
  8. Digital Safety & Security – Educating children on things such as viruses, different sites that can damage your computer, and that clicking on everything is ok, it can create many problems within technology.
  9. Digital Health & Wellness – Ensuring we are using the digital world in a positive and healthy manner, not engaging in cyberbullying, looking at inappropriate sites, etc.

I believe that it’s important for all of these elements to be incorporated into the curriculum throughout all grade levels, being mindful as to what is developmentally appropriate,  the faster we incorporate the better hold we will have on children understanding the digital world.

Digital Citizenship in the Classroom

In conclusion, I believe strongly that these elements should be incorporated into our curriculums, so we are preparing our students with knowledge and understanding on how to be safe in our forever evolving technological world, also ensuring us as future educators are also learning. I am interested to hear what everyone else’s idea’s on how to incorporate these elements into the classroom.

Lifestyle Changes

So, as I mentioned before in my last post,  I recently found out I am insulin-resistant. So this past week I have dived into learning more about this diagnosis and making some notes on how I can incorporate a lifestyle change to help better myself.

What Is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin resistance is a complex condition in which your body doesn’t respond as it should to insulin. Insulin is a hormone your pancreas makes that’s essential for regulating blood sugar levels. Several genetic and lifestyle factors can contribute to insulin resistance.

I have learned quite a bit this week, concerning insulin resistance. I did not know that it could be classified as pre-diabetic, my knowledge around insulin resistance mainly came from TikTok and as we all know that social platform is not a good tool to get viable information.  I also was alarmed at the percentage of people that actually live with this condition. I was reading this article about this condition, and it mentions that on average 40% of people in North America live with it, and many do not know.

My Signs and Symptoms,

Some signs and symptoms I had researched and found out about insulin resistance, is that some people can develop skin tags, which is in turn makes a lot of sense in my case as about 4 months ago I needed to get 3 skin tags removed around my neck, and I had just assumed they had developed from pregnancy, as that can happen. I also had symptoms like weight changes, I felt like I was gaining weight and I was not able to keep it off, no matter how much I tried. I also just chalked that up to getting older, and having hormonal issues. Increased hunger was also a factor I was struggling with, I felt like my appetite was insatiable.  Looking back I had ignored these signs for a long time, and honestly it was not until I had an appointment with a naturopath doctor, and him putting things into perspective for me, and explaining the prognosis to me in language I could understand.  I felt a little better being taught what it was instead of having prescriptions and tests done with no results from my clinic visits.

I will have to admit that I have some health anxiety around health conditions, as we know the web can be a scary place, and when researching things like this can send us down a rabbit hole.  I luckily talked things through with my doctor and they had given me a realistic timeline of expectations and goals to work towards in order to better my lifestyle.

Goals!

Some goals my doctor and myself have set to help ease into this lifestyle change without being completely overwhelmed, is trying to limit the amount of carbs, refined sugars, and making sure I can fit in physically activity when I can.   He stressed to my that I need to ensure I am making these goals reasonable and to not overwhelm myself with thinking I have to restructure my entire life.

Some things I have slowly incorporated;

  • Taking my dog for a walk around the block every evening (even if it is cold, bundle up) Many different colorful vegetables
  • When having carbs, seeing if I could possibly substitute other things such as vegetables or proteins into my meal (not always possible)
  • Do not eat in the evening (as i was informed it will help my body not have to work in overtime breaking down sugars while I sleep)
  • Trying to reach a goal of having 60 g of protein a day (surprisingly harder than I anticipated)
  • Be mindful of my portions (eating off of a child’s plate, to help fool my eyes)

I am starting with these things and allowing myself to have some grace, as change is never an easy thing but it is crucial now so I do not have issues in the future. So moving forward, I will be sharing the journey of changing my habits, and how things are going.  I am taking you all along this ride with me, so buckle up!

Sickness, and Food Restrictions :(

This week unfortunately has not been my week.  I have been living on Lipton’s chicken noodle soup and crackers.  Sickness has taken over, and on top of that, I have also found out I am insulin-resistant. Little backstory,  I have been struggling with some blood sugar issues, which have led to surprising hormonal issues as well, and after clinic visit after clinic visit with no answers and great frustration on both ends both doctors and me. I reached out to a naturopath doctor, and we had a lengthy discussion of the concerns I was having.  We opted for a blood test and another test (which is escaping my brain at the moment) which came back and proved I am insulin-resistant.

Food Restrictions

We had discussed the need to limit certain foods, now I need to steer myself into some research about insulin resistance and the food I will need to stray away from.  My doctor suggested that I need to up my protein intake and lower my carb intake, he mentioned he does not want me to completely get onto a keto diet, which I am sure many of you know what that is. High fat, high protein diet with next to no carbs. He wants me to start slow and limit the amount of carbs I intake, so that will mean I need to delve into some knowledge I have not acquired thus far.  In all honesty, it feels kind of overwhelming and I am not feeling any sort of way  lately to do research. It is just trying to get better from this awful flu/cold thing going around.

I am hoping to research a little more about insulin resistance and diet this week, as I am needing to ensure I get back on track!

Sorry my post is less than exciting, hopefully this next week will be better

The Advancements of Technology, and the Classroom!

Michael Wesh’s YouTube lecture on the introduction of YouTube has many points, concerning the internet and the connections made, noting not all of them being a negative thing.  He mentions the “Numa Numa” trend and how it is presented in a fun and positive trend. He mentions that this trend had reached a global audience allowed for connections to be made, and saw a positive reaction to the original video, snowballing others to give it a shot, and “spread” that fun, and confident movement.

One thing everyone can agree on is that there have been many technological advances, and there continue to be more and more advances and new technologies coming out.  We as humans today have the ability to have computers do most of our thinking for us. This seems to be harmless, but the future of the classroom could be in jeopardy if there is not a healthy balance between technology and teaching.  In saying that I mean, it is more often then not, we witness humans relying on computers to give us answers.  We see less and less textbooks, and more online versions, owners manuals for vehicles are now digital, etc. Which requires less work to learn how to read, write, comprehend. I do however believe that teachers, and students do need to understand how technology works, but due to the fact it is nearly impossible to get away from now a days, and the advancements in education around technology have been a growing industry.

Wesh takes the viewers through a process of his video he had uploaded to youtube and how it had grown exponentially   throughout a few days, he strategically timed his upload and followed it around, to see all of the different site’s it had ended up on and the impact they had on his views, to sustain him at the top spot, even after the Superbowl, in which his prediction was it would knock his video down very quick.  This process is to teach the audience I believe, the impact that the internet has and how influential it can be.  I think as teacher and future educators we have to understand and appreciate the “old fashioned” ways of teaching, after all we are still humans and need human -to – human relationships to function.  It is more appreciated and it more likely to “stick” when we are taught and challenged by other human beings.  Education will need to ensure a healthy balance between technology and human connections.  I think using creative ways to teach students, as opposed to relying on technology to give us the answers, will help create the balance needed and educating more people on the harms too much technology can hinder a growing mind.  It is greatly influential and should be used appropriately, and accordingly.  Teaching students the dangers of the internet, and the realty of “if it is on the internet, it is on there forever” concept is very real.

Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins!

This week I wanted to take it back to the old-school ways and dive into a family recipe book I have had in my drawer since my great grandma passed away.  I have been wanting to try out some baking this week and allow myself to just enjoy it and not have to rush through, I wanted to enjoy the process of having a physical recipe with me and refer to it, as opposed to having to keep going back and forth to my phone and unlocking it, and finding the recipe, or going back to my screenshots, etc.  If anyone has ever used an online recipe, they can relate to the annoyance of having to go back and forth to your phone is.

Finding the recipe to use

I had dug out the family recipe book that my family created just before my great grandma had passed away.  I had ventured through the book and I struggled to find what I wanted to make.  There was so many things and I did not have enough time to obviously cook all of them, so I thought to myself to find a recipe my daughter could possibly help me with, as cooking is a life skill, and she loves to be helpful. I looked around the kitchen and I had the ingredients to do banana chocolate chip muffins, which are a staple in most homes, and a good lunch snack food my daughter throughout the week. I ended up finding my auntie Marlene’s recipe for banana chocolate chip muffins.  It was not too complicated and Hudsyn could help me with all of the steps.

The process

To start off the process, I gathered all the ingredients, and measuring utensils we needed and got the dish water ready for the dirty dishes. I will admit that I actually have a very odd sensory issue when it comes to flour.  I am not able to touch it as I get goosebumps and it triggers my gag reflex – odd I know, explanation is unknown.  Luckily this is where Hudsyn (my daughter) comes into save the day, as she does not have a sensory issue.  I read the recipe out to her, and help her measure out the ingredients, she puts all the ingredients into the mixing bowl, and we take turns mixing as she complained her tiny arms were getting tired. We get to the process of putting the mixture into the liners and she wants to take that job on all by herself.  Please note, this sends my OCD into a frenzy, because I struggle with mess, but I allowed her to give it a go.  She did a very good job and took her time to ensure she did not make too much of a mess. Note, my daughter sings in almost every task she does, such as hockey, bathing, getting dressed, etc.  She is a real songbird!

 Enjoying the final product!

The final product was delicious, and honestly I enjoyed the journey. It was calming, and I reflected on the awesome experience it brought to my daughter and I.  I realize during this weeks cooking challenge,  that I need to incorporate Hudsyn into my learning journey as well, because she is a small sponge in life right now, and I want her to have a positive relationship with food, and learn to have these skills as she gets older, and more independent.

Loaded Gnocchi Soup!!

This cooking experience was inspired by a TikTok video. I came across a loaded gnocchi soup recipe. I watched the video, and I wanted to give it a shot. I have always wanted to try gnocchi, but I have never eaten or cooked it before, so this was my opportunity.

First I began to prep my ingredients. I cooked my bacon, diced my onion small, etc. and the came the step to add my gnocchi.  After reading the package I had bought I realized that I bought the skillet gnocchi.  Honestly I just hoped for the best because I did not want to take them back to the store and get another package.

The recipe called for a pound of gnocchi and I did not have the scale to weigh them out.  So in this instance, I “measured with my heart.”  I grew more and more anxious as I grew closer to the final result.  Not in the aspect that I was not doing it correctly, just in the sense that I was not sure how this kind of food was going to taste, and it made me nervous, I did not want to waste a meal.  Once it was time to add my “skillet” gnocchi, I allowed for that to simmer in the pot and I was able to clean up my ingredients and ensure I could get some dish water ready for clean up.  The cleaning up aspect was not as bad as I anticipated.  It took less than 5 minutes to do all the dishes.

Final Results!

I finished up my dishes and allowed for the soup to simmer. It was time to try it out.  To my amazement, it was actually pretty good, even with using the skillet gnocchi.Loaded Gnocchi Soup   I added my bacon garnish and cheese to the bowl and ate it all.

Cons to the recipe

A couple things I wish could be different is the amount of soup this made.  Being a single mom and having a picky child. I think this recipe had made way too much for our family, so I will be sharing my soup with my other family members to ensure it does not go to waste.

TikTok video

One platform I have never used before, is TikTok.  Even though I send a ridiculous amount of time looking at TikTok’s and having the inspiration from that platform be that for this soup.  I have never personally made one before.  So, I chose to do a TikTok and I wanted it to be short and sweet.

Using TikTok I was humbled to know that it is not as easy as it looks.  I had first off recorded an entire minute of nothing, and then while trying to edit, I struggled with trying to find the edit function to cut out the 49 seconds of black screen *insert facepalm emoji* I know that I am 29 and this should not be a foreign thing to me, meaning, making something as easy as a TikTok video but embarrassingly enough it very much is.  I think that if I had a bit more practice with it, I would be able to get it, and it not be as intimidating.  But I do not find TikTok an accurate site either.  TikTok makes it very easy to get the impression things are so easy and fast, and let me bear the bad news.  IT IS NOT.

now ladies and gentlemen, please enjoy my first official TikTok.

French Toast Casserole!

So, to start this post, this was incredibly easy to prep this breakfast idea. I struggle with breakfast ideas, and I am positive my daughter can only eat so much cereal before it gets boring. This recipe for the French toast casserole was incredibly easy. It took me less than 15 minutes to prep, and the clean-up was relatively easy, not many dishes were dirtied. I wanted to use a french toast casserole recipe that did not require a lot of ingredients. So the one I chose was an easy enough recipe that it wasn’t too intimidating.

This recipe did require me to have it sit overnight for best results.  This is the image of what it is supposed to look like before I cook it in the am.  I will leave the mixture in the fridge overnight cook it in the morning and serve it for a breakfast option with some healthy fruit options, as this recipe requires more sugar than I would like to admit.

French Toast Casserole prepped

I have decided to use youtube as my tool to help describe my process throughout this cooking journey.  I am going to admit that I did have to use a you tube video to show me how to upload a video from my phone.  I am very technologically behind as I do not post video’s ever on the internet. Due to the fact, I do not find a lot of interest in it, and it seems time consuming, and time is one thing I do not have a lot to spare.  The “how to” video gave me a step by step on the how to upload on both my computer and my mobile phone.

Stay tuned for the results, hopefully it is a hit!

Easy Cheesy Scallop Potatoes, and a Pot Roast!

So tonight I had planned a supper for my family.  Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of my masterpieces and I wanted to take a shot at something I had not done before by myself.  If I being honest, cooking sometimes gives me anxiety and the time to prep a meal stresses me out the most, and how to properly cook certain foods.  But I want to learn so badly, and I know that I am not going to learn overnight, so I am taking baby steps throughout this to ensure I do not get discouraged.  So first, I got myself organized and grabbed my groceries yesterday, to my surprise it did not take a lot of effort or ingredients to make happen.  I read this easy cheesy scalloped potato recipe I found online.  When looking at the recipe given, I did try and incorporate my own “twist” to it.  I had a goal at the beginning to try and hide vegetables, because my daughter is very picky when it comes to vegetables and is not open to even trying them, in this instance, I made sure to chop the onion super small so my daughter would not notice and I am chalking that up to a win because she did not complain once, nor did she find an onion of garlic! #momwin

Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes

I paired these potatoes with a slow-cooked roast and it was a huge hit.  I did alter the recipe a little bit, as I did not add the tomato paste, and I used beef stock instead of chicken stock.  Altering the recipe a bit I was afraid that it would not taste good or that the paste might make it taste different, but by the sounds of everyone eating at the table, it was delicious.  I found a newfound love for my slow cooker and realized that it takes next to nothing to prep a meal and just let it cook all day on low in there, and this beef roast came out so juicy and flavorful.   Pot roast in transparent background.

This week I have taken some time to step back and really consciously think about meals, and talk to myself in a positive matter when it comes to food. The fact that I do not need to be perfect, and somethings might be a flop is okay.  They will not always be 5 star gourmet meals, and looking on the internet and finding some quick recipes that are both healthy and filling.  I was surprised on what I can pair together, and what I can make quick for my daughters lunch, etc.  Next week I do plan on looking into some breakfast ideas, breakfast casseroles, smoothies, etc.  Also following my goal of hiding veggies in food.  Smoothies are such a great way to do that. Spinach, avocado, etc.  Next weeks plan is already in the works, so stay tuned!

Technology in my daily life!

In today’s world, it is nearly impossible to escape technology, which is the fastest-growing industry in terms of advances.  As a single mother, my cell phone is my lifeline. I use everything from my calendar app to my team link (for my daughter’s hockey schedule) to keep my life (somewhat) organized.  There is nothing online, as of right now that I use per se to write down my daily tasks or help keep that part of my life organized.  Truthfully I am not a tech-savvy person, and I like to keep it old-school and use my good reliable mom calendar I get from Amazon. I would like to become more tech-savvy and reach out to other platforms to widen my knowledge around this topic, but as for right now, a significant part of my relationship with technology is solely socially and entertainment-based.

However, I use my laptop every single day due to it being my main resource to my education.  Even though that is not for entertainment reasons, I participate in lectures over Zoom twice a week, and I do all of my assignments online mostly working with word and PowerPoint and submit all my work online. My math class is semester requires me to submit my written work by scanning my work and  sending to my professor for review.   I do try my best to have a schedule when it comes to schoolwork. Admittingly, I do fall off the wagon sometimes, as I work as a casual E.A in our school division, and get called last minute, but  having a schedule helps keep me accountable, and efficient. I try to ensure I work on and strive to finish assignments in the morning, it does not work out all the time, as mentioned before, things need my attention last minute, but I have learned that my brain works better at that time of day and allows for me participate in the evening tasks that my household requires me to be present for, and I feel less rushed to get my work done.

In the future I would like to become more tech savvy and I hope that this class will open up a little more for me in that sense, as many forms of technology are being introduced into education and as a future educator I believe I need to be teachable in that sense.  I look forward to seeing and hearing of some resources to help me become better in this changing technological world.

I have been striving to expand my palette with food.   I am currently a single mom and I live with a picky eater, and I am hoping that I can incorporate some more variety and flavor in our menu at home.  We are quite limited to food I have noticed lately, and I am over making the same things over and over again.  I would love to make food and healthy choices a good experience for my daughter.   I am striving to find some recipes and ideas on incorporating healthy foods into our diet, as we very much lack that in our household.

To start my journey, I want to start small and ensure I make the experience as positive and easy as I can.  I will incorporate some of the ideas outlined in a video I found online, it is a helpful tool, for beginners and is relatable as it is also from another mom on how she hides vegetables within her meals I will most definitely take these tips and tricks into consideration when planning my next meals.  To add, we have a busy schedule during the week with my daughter’s hockey and I would love to be able to take these meals with us to the rink to help eliminate the need to rush for food when we get home for supper, or eliminate the need to buy fast food as it is quick and easy.
