The New Powers of AI

AI is taking the world by storm and almost everyone has used the biggest AI tool out there ChatGPT. Well everyone except this guy. I haven’t really cared to use any AI tools that have been taking over recently. Really the only one I have used is the Snapchat AI, which failed me very quickly after in couldn’t factor a trinomial properly. However, I have decided to try out ChatGPT for the first time to see if I get better results and see how it could be used by educators and students for educational purposes.

Firstly, I was very impressed with how well it can solve math problems. I also like the explanation that it gives for solving a question, while maybe not explained perfectly it can certainly act as a tool for helping students solve and understand problems. This is the first big way students can use this tool. ChatGPT can give hints, explain how to solve a problem and do it a different way if asked. While it isn’t the greatest at explaining it can be a good secondary tool for students struggling with a task.

As a teacher I think ChatGPT has many useful things to offer. ChatGPT can make lesson plans; although, I wouldn’t personally use any of them without making modifications first. It can offer a good starting ground or spark some ideas for lessons, which can be valuable. I also found that it can generate some decent ideas for activities for different lessons, which is also great for teachers. It can also generate word problems super quickly which is super helpful since coming up with unique problems takes quite a while especially if you need many for an assignment.

Finally, ChatGPT can be a good tool to use in the classroom with students if done effectively. In a math classroom I like the idea of students asking it math questions we know how to solve and seeing if they can spot a mistake. You could also use the AI itself to solve a question in 2 ways with one way being wrong.

AI is an unavoidable reality and with it taking over as much as it is we can’t keep it out of education, since students will use it with or without our support. I think that teachers implementing ai in a productive way is important to show students how it can be utilized effectively. AI can offer many useful tools for educators but it is important we use it responsibly to set a good example for students.

  1. Hi Kamden,
I agree with you! ChatGPT can be such a useful tool but only if students use it correctly and not abuse it. I think that it is important to talk about the great uses of Ai and the flaws that Ai has as well! It doesn’t get the correct answers 100% of the time which is annoying when I really need an answer!!!

  2. Like all the tools we use of course its important to teach those using them the proper way! I think just like many of us have found through our time in the education program, AI can be very helpful and its inevitable integration into EVERYTHING is coming so as future or current teachers I think it is important for us to have classes like this one so we can pass on that same knowledge.
