Breaking Down Barriers: Week 6 of Learning

This week I did continue learning my algorithms through the jperm.net website where I use the trainer found here to practice my algorithms. I have now learned all of the algorithms I set out to learn at the beginning of this journey. Now I just need to continue practicing them and implementing them into my solves.

The major thing I learned this week was called look ahead. If you watched my solves you may notice that a lot of the time is spent with me just looking at the cube and the reason for that is poor look ahead. When you solve pieces on the cube you want to look ahead at the next pieces you are going to solve but I am not good at this yet, so I pause after solving pieces to find the next ones to solve. I watched the following video to help practice my look ahead.

This video has helped a lot as it allowed me to think about tracking and looking at pieces in a completely different way. There are ideas I had never thought of before and I am practicing on implementing them into my solves.

So, did the work I did on improving my look ahead help? Well, my best average for this week was as follows: 19.55, 19.54, 19.09, (34.38), (18.29) = 19.39 seconds. The solves can be found in the video below.

This is the best average I have ever achieved and the very first time I have got an average under 20 seconds, so this is a huge milestone. I feel like my look ahead is a major reason for this big drop in time. Every solve in this average had good look ahead, the reason for the 34 second solve was a mistake made in the last step. This is a big step forward in learning journey and I hope that during the last few weeks of the semester I can break this average. I will continue to work on look ahead and practice my algorithms next week, but I also hope to learn some more advanced techniques for the beginning of my solves.

  1. Hey Kamden,
So happy to hear that you had an average of under 20 seconds, that is awesome! It is common to make mistakes, so keep going. I wish you the best of luck as you continue!

  2. Hey Kamden,
I commend you for your patience and dedication to learning this! Also super interesting learning about the think ahead message, I feel like that is something everyone can do when reflecting on some things in their day to day lives. Congrats on your average under 20 seconds! Watching videos of people complete puzzles like the rubics cube is always so satisfying to see. Good luck in your continuing practice 🙂
