I use technology a lot everyday. It has become such an integral part of daily life that I rarely think about how much it has taken over my life. Most of my time on technology is on my phone or laptop. I spend most of my time on technology on YouTube, Tik Tok, Chrome/Safari, Instagram and streaming services. As you could probably see, most of these are not particularly productive uses of my time. The only thing that is productive is my use of Chrome and Safari to complete school work online. Most of my time is spent on personal enjoyment rather than school work.
I often struggle when it comes to balancing my screen time with being productive on school work and leisure. I don’t have any particular system to stay focused and often become distracted by something on my phone when I’m working on my laptop. It’s probably a good idea to have a designated device that is only for school work, but I use my laptop to watch things and often have YouTube or other tabs left open which can tempt me away from my work. I also don’t really have a dedicated time set up for school work, it could be 10:00 am or 12:00 am (like it may be right now), which could also help to avoid distractions.
My organization skills are not great and that is especially true within technology. I don’t really ever utilize technology to plan outside of putting some appointments in my calendar on my phone. I do use my laptop to take notes in classes as it is a touch screen. I use OneNote to store and organize my notes for classes and also use it for practice work and assignments. I like this tool as it saves on paper and writing tools while allowing me to achieve the same things. However, the organization when it comes to typed assignments and documents is nonexistent everything just sits in either my downloads or in Google docs not sorted into folders or anything.
Overall, technology is more of a distraction to me than it is a benefit. I certainly need to work on using it more effectively in my daily life. There is value in entertainment, but I indulge in it more than I should when I have assignments to get done and blogs to write.
I definitely relate to the fact of technology being more of a distraction than a benefit. I recommend putting your phone on do not disturb when trying to complete assignments. That usually helps for me!
