One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: Week 2 of Learning

This week I continued to learn algorithms, but this time I decided to use YouTube. I found a video showing which had all 57 algorithms I needed. The video is shown below.

I struggled learning with this video for a few reasons. Firstly, while this video does explain how to do each algorithm it feels more like a showcase rather than an out right guide. Since he is only showing off the algorithms he uses, it means they may not be the ones fit for me. I discovered many times throughout this video that there were better suited algorithms for me by looking at a website. That is the advantage of using a website, as it can show many different cases and you can choose the one best suited for you. It is nice that he explains and shows how he does the algorithms, which is what we call finger tricks. However, I don’t usually struggle at finding my own finger tricks for algorithms, so this is a small upside. I also struggled to retain the algorithms, I felt myself having to go back countless times to re learn which is something I didn’t experience with the website. Overall I was only able to learn about 4 algorithms over the week which is quite low compared to last week. It should also be said I don’t mean disrespect to the creator the video is well done it just isn’t suited well to my particular learning style.

So this aspect of my learning was slow, but how were my solves? Well my best average was as follows: 24.13, 23.11, (19.96), (34.28), 24.81= 24.02. The solves are shown in the video below.

While my best average isn’t terrible this was the only second average I did for the week and I saw no improvements afterwards. I did more solves throughout the week and my times spiked back to around 30 seconds, which is no better than where I started. It is definitely discouraging and led to me not doing as many solves as I did last week. However, this is part of the learning process, not every day is going to be your best and it’s important to keep going.

Next week I will continue learning algorithms but I will being using a website again, as the video format didn’t work well. I will also continue to practice solving and implementing algorithms in my solves. Hoping to get back in the right direction next week.

  1. Hi Kamden! I think your learning project is super cool. I like that you reflected on what your best practice was and that you were able to discover that the youtube video you picked out wasn’t as beneficial for you as going through a website! Watching you complete some of the algorithms was very impressive. I appreciate your honesty about how you felt you did not improve much this week. I can definitely relate to you as this week I failed multiple times in my learning project, but, resiliency is a HUGE part of the learning process and it is important to just keep trying even when you feel discouraged because it is that much more rewarding once you get it right! 🙂

    Good luck!

  2. Hello Kamden! I really enjoy following your learning project, regardless of if there are some set-backs or not! It’s so great that you can be honest with yourself, and reflect on how you can improve. That is such an important strength to have. Can’t wait to read more about all of your successes! 🙂
