Digitalization of Classrooms

The assigned YouTube video was very interesting. I was blown away by how one video can go viral so fast and be used as a method to connect people from all across the world. While this may seem like a positive thing, and it can be, I am very hesitant to use technology/social media in my classroom on a daily basis.

Reasons Why I am Hesitant to Encourage Tech/Social Media Use

  • Students already spend hours on their devices when they aren’t at school. Having time to disconnect and be present in their learning is important.
  • Students need more connection with their friends and teachers. Socialization face to face is crucial for well-being.
  • Social media can lead to dangerous circumstances such as bullying, sextortion, blackmail, scams, etc.

As we discussed in our last class, the internet has the potential to be a very dangerous place. Students are already addicted to their devices, and I would like to encourage them to be mindful and spend more time disconnected from screens.

Although, technology isn’t all bad and deserves to have a place in the classroom when it is needed. As seen in the Wesch video, technology and social media have the power to connect people from across the world that would not otherwise be possible.

How I Plan to Include Technology in My Classroom

  • Teach students about safe technology/social media/internet use – this would include educating them about how much screen time they have, internet predators, cyber bullying, etc.
  • Use technology in situations where it is needed/beneficial – for example, if a student needs to type their work instead of writing it as an accommodation.
  • Use technology for assignments/projects, but not all the time – In certain situations, creating videos, researching, and using apps is needed.
  • Balance being disconnected for periods of time and also having time dedicated to using technology as a tool

While both sides of the debate about technology in schools being good/bad have valid points, I believe that the path forward should be grounded in balance. We don’t need to completely ban it from schools, but we also should not have students glued to a computer/iPad all day long. Technology obviously has many benefits and students need to be educated on how to use it because our world is largely digital. We also have to be realistic about the potential dangers of technology and educate students so they are aware of these dangers and how to prevent them. We know that parents may not be aware of their child’s technology use, so it is important for teachers to educate students about safe usage for these devices that have become such a large part of our lives.

  1. I love your take on students using technology in the classroom! There are so many dangers to social media and screen time is climbing by the minute! I also like how you pointed out how crucial it is to have social connections. I’ve worked quite a few years in customer service and it can be so hard to get through a transaction when people don’t learn basic social communication skills.
