Social Media Use
When I look at where I spend my time digitally, the most commonly used apps on my phone would be Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. I obviously do not use these apps for anything productivity related. I usually just end up scrolling mindlessly and laughing at reels. I usually use Pinterest to find inspiration for fashion, outfits, nail designs, and home decor. One of the biggest consequences of my social media post is probably being influenced to buy various things that I probably would not have purchased if I didn’t see it on social media.
Productivity
The digital tools that I primarily use for productivity are mainly google docs, my email, my notes app, and the calendar on my iPhone. When I am in school, I also use UR Courses, Canva, and video editing systems like Clipchamp. I would say that the biggest tool I use for overall productivity is my notes app. I basically use it to dump everything going on in my head into one place. I use it to keep track of recipes, passwords, important things I want to remember, and also make to do lists. By making lists, I can keep myself on track. This also helps me feel less overwhelmed because I am able to complete tasks in order from most to least important.
Google docs is a great tool that I use for all of my assignments, as well as taking notes. I like that I can create folders to keep myself organized for each class/subject area. I would also use google docs as a teacher because I can organize my materials by each subject I am teaching.
Trying to Achieve Balance
Right now, I do not feel like I have balance in my relationship with social media. I think I spend a bit too much time on Instagram and Facebook. I would ideally like to reduce the amount of time I spend scrolling to be more mindful and engaged in my life. In order to work towards being more mindful, I have set a timer on my phone to turn off social media after thirty minutes of scrolling. I find that the timer that is built into the iPhone is a bit useless because it gives you the option to turn it off for the day. How easy is it to click the off button and just keep scrolling? Very easy! Maybe the answer to achieving more balance for me is to set the time a bit longer than thirty minutes, but make a commitment to stop scrolling once my social media time runs out.
On average, most days I have about two hours total of screen time, and I would like to reduce that a bit. Over the course of a week, it said that I had about 11 hours total of screen time. I don’t like that in the course of one week, I am spending nearly one full day of time awake on screens. Ideally, I would like to spend more time with the people I love and doing more productive things like cleaning up my house, working on school, or engaging in self care activities.
