One Stitch at a Time: A Beginners Journey to Crocheting
Welcome to week one of my learning project! For my project, I’m choosing to learn how to crochet. You may be asking why, and to put it simply, I’ve always wanted to learn how to crochet and/or knit because it looks fun and keeps your hands busy. I tend to fidget a lot and find myself bored scrolling TikTok and this video discusses some pros of crocheting and your mental health. I also like the idea of being able to make someone a handmade gift, and crocheting would be great. Some of my inspiration came from my old Girl Guide leader, who used to knit and crochet, and my main inspiration comes from TikTok since crocheting is trending right now.
For this project, I am a total beginner with no previous experience. I plan to use YouTube and TikTok as my main sources for learning the basics of crocheting, tips that will help a beginner, and getting down the techniques needed to move on to an actual project. I want to start small, and if all goes well I would love to crochet myself a blanket and cardigan eventually. However, my realistic end goal for this semester is to do some small projects such as a washcloth, a headband, and a small stuffed animal.
Since this is week one and my starting point, I want to learn more about crocheting and how to do a basic stitch using this video recommended by my friend who just started a couple of weeks ago. Once I have mastered the basic stitch, I will practice until I feel confident and then move on to my first project. Thank you for reading my first post on my crochet journey and see you next week for more stitches!
Hey Kylee! I’m so happy you’re choosing to take up crocheting. My grandma taught it to me when I was younger, but I did not have the patience for it. It is such a good way for people to relax and for them to use their hands for something so they can still keep moving. It sounds like it’s going to be pretty relaxing for you. Just make sure your puppies don’t get a hold of your stuff! I can’t wait to see your progress with this. I look forward to seeing more of your posts! Maybe afterwards, I can get you to make me a penguin! :))
Hi Kylee!
I was reading your blog and it reminded me of the time when I began to learn crocheting from my teacher at school and my mother at home. I remember I learnt how to crochet in the seventh grade. I saw my mother crocheting some scarves and winter hats as well as small blankets. I was so fascinated that I learnt it very quickly and I crocheted some hats too. The crocheting that I enjoyed the most was, making laces and borders around my dresses and scarves. There might be hardly any of my dress or a scarf, without crochet creativity. I couldn’t manage the time to have that creativity active still but I strongly believe, its a relaxing and satisfying art.
I would love to follow your entertaining journey for crochet and looking forward to keeping track of your learning.
Hey Kylee!
Super excited to follow along on your journey of crochet! I was debating between this idea for my learning project and the one I chose so I’m excited to follow along!
I’ve gotten super interested in crochet because I’ve recently seen TikToks of different teachers getting their students to create a touque then they will crochet it for the student to have, and see their creation in real life.
A little off-topic, but I’m excited to watch this journey of yours!
Thanks for sharing!
