Experiential Learning
This semester in my ECS 303 class was the first time I had learned about the different kinds of instructional strategies that are out there. It is funny to think that I have used them all before but just didn’t know the names for them. Now knowing those names, I got the opportunity to explore a little more about one of them which was experiential learning. Here I want to share with you what I have learned about experiential learning but also the way me and the my group shared it with the rest of our class.
Learning:
Personally at the start of this I had no idea what experiential learning even was, all I could do was take my best guess as to what I thought it meant. However after looking a little closer at it I have come to find out that experiential learning means that your are learning through doing something or by doing something and the job of the teacher is really just to facilitate. After learning this me and my group started to think of what that meant and we came up with some idea like field trips and role playing) Which then lead us into our idea for how we were going to them share this strategy with our ECS class.
Experiential Learning Facilitation:
For this facilitation we decided to have student experiment with body percussion and so we started off by asking the student what they thought body percussion was after we asked them that, we put all of the students into groups. Once they were in their groups we asked them to experiment with body percussion for a few minutes for them to get an idea of what it was. After they were done experimenting we gave each group a set of lyrics to the song jingle bells (Side note jingle bells is a winter song). After giving them the lyrics we asked them to come up with body percussion to the lyrics that we gave them. After all groups were done we had all of the students present the body percussion that they came up with.
As you can see from this, throughout this time they learnt body percussion, they did it thought doing the experimentation on their own and also with group members. which then resulted in them knowing how use it to put together the body percussion to this song.
Closure:
This is just one instructional Strategy that I got to look at more close up for myself. As I go on I hope to get the opportunity for myself to look at the other more!
