Stitch by Stitch

I’m finally on the downward swing of my knitting project. This weeks new skill was learning how to decrease the number of stitches on my dishcloth. Decreasing the amount of stitches is important as I have been knitting on a diagonal and at the moment my dishcloth is a triangle shape. Whether or not these sorts of projects are knit on the diagonal most of the time I’m not really sure. I followed the first video I found that was helpful to a T.

When searching for a new resource to support my need to learn how to decrease stitches I consulted TikTok. There was a plethora of videos that came up when I searched “reducing stitches when knitting”. I searched through the results and determined that there were two recommended ways that all the “pros” suggested that I may want to use. Strategy #1 followed 3 different steps

  1. Slipping the first stitch.
  2. Knitting the next two stitches together.
  3. Passing the slipped stitch over.

This strategy seemed entirely complicated so I decided to continue to hunt for another option. I came across what I will call strategy #2 which included only 2 steps.

  1. Sliding your needle through 2 loops.
  2. Continue and knit a basic knit stitch.

This strategy allowed me to use my prior knowledge with a stitch I have gotten decently OK at doing throughout my practice. 2 TikTok videos helped me to make my choice of what strategy I wanted to use. Both videos were filmed up close and provided a visual learner like myself, with a great and clear view so I could experiment and figure out what I had to do to complete the stitch. Additionally, both videos were made by the very same creator. I had no problem following the video without audio instructions, but I think adding audio to the short tutorials would make them more effective for a user. Overall, with a quick TikTok search, I was on my way, knitting stitch by stitch towards the finish line of my project!
