Instructions
Read the following book and create a think aloud.
This think aloud should emphasize comprehension. You might focus on one of the strategies on page 75-82 of the textbook:
- Using and building on prior knowledge
- Predicting
- Generating and answering questions
- Monitoring comprehension
- Inferring
- Visualizing
- Identifying and summarizing information
- Responding to text
- What strategy will you focus on in your think aloud? – Questioning/inferring
Now write a script for your think aloud. Include everything the teacher will say. Remember the purpose of the think aloud is to model what you are thinking as you read.
- What will you say before reading?
I am looking at the cover of the book and noticing that there are multiple characters on the cover that seem to be from different nationalities. I also see that the main character is in a chef outfit – I’m wondering if she is going to be teaching a cooking class! We notice that the title of the book is “Salma the Syrian Chef”, I wonder if the little girl might be named Salma? I’m thinking that there are going to be a lot of beautiful pictures in this book because there is an artists’ name on the front.
- What will you say during reading? Pick 2-4 points in the book where you will stop and think aloud. Include the page numbers and your script.
Page 4:
I see that Salma is working through learning how to practice the word Vancouver. I also have to sometimes slow down and sound out words that I am not familiar with.
Page 6:
I wonder what is a refugee camp? Who are the boys that she is talking about – are they her brothers or are they maybe some friends that she made at a refugee camp?
Salma says that her moms’ giggle sounds like the ringing of bells on the older boys’ bikes. I wonder what she means by that? Maybe she means that her mothers’ giggle is high-pitched?
- What will you say after reading?
I am reflecting on some of the inferences I did and questions I asked throughout this book. How many questions was I able to answer? Were there any things that I should research more?
I am curious about the recipes that were shared in this book! I wonder what foul shami tastes like?
I am thinking about who I would ask for help when I am looking to create new things?
- Extension activities If you have time, brainstorm some activities that you might do with your students to extend the learning.
