My field experience was at Henry Braun Elementary School. My experience was amazing, I had the opportunity to observe multiple grades and interact with students. It was an incredible opportunity to interact with students in a school setting because, before the field experience, I had no experience working with kids in a school setting.
Although unfortunately, my field experience differed from others because of the recent teacher strike in Saskatchewan. I was only able to go to my placement three times and one of them was also cut into two hours instead of four. It shows how much the government’s actions are affecting everyone; K-12 students, teachers, all school staff, parents, families, and university students as well. I wish that I could have gotten more time with the students as my school had an inclusion program where children diagnosed with autism had a special class with an attached small sensory gym. My last field day was scheduled to be in that class so I was extremely disappointed that I was unable to have that experience in the class.
On my first day, I was in a grade 1/2 split class, the kids were doing experiments to learn about force and motion. I got to interact with many kids and help with their little projects. I had a lot of fun and that class had an amazing dynamic where everyone was engaged in the lesson and what they were learning. I was very surprised because I never considered working with younger grades and I loved it with the little ones. That day was the one that stood out in my entire experience as I was surprised by the welcoming environment of the school. Overall I am very grateful for the opportunity to be at Henry Braun, and it was an amazing experience to be included in the school!
