Let’s Knot Panic – I’m Learning Macramé

Welcome to my EDTEC 300 Learning Project!

I have decided to challenge myself by diving into the beautiful art of macramé knots. I am a complete beginner when it comes to this new hobby I hope to master. I know that it involves knots, cords, and patterns, but how to actually put it all into action, complete BEGINNER!

Why macramé? I’ve taught myself how to knit, crochet, and both involve working with yarn and following patterns. I figured, why not try patterned knots with a string called cord? It can’t be that hard.. right? Hopefully, my string-based skills from knitting and crocheting will allow me to grasp the understanding of creating patterned knots. (Let’s sure hope!).

The first resource I dove into to familiarize myself with the idea of macramé was, “How To Macrame – The Ultimate Beginners Guide”. This resource made me aware of what exactly you can make with macrame because it’s not just plant hangers and keychains! You can create wall hangings, table runners, coasters, jewelry, and the list goes on. As a beginner, I plan on keeping it quite simple with key chains or wall hangings, to be able to grasp the basics of the knots I learn. But who knows? Maybe I’ll push myself to create a full plant hanger by the end!

I already have some material purchased. I intended to master this craft months ago, but life got busy. That being said, this learning project is a great opportunity for me to put to use the material I have tucked away.

My Plan of Action/Goals:

Week 1 – Review “How To Macrame – The Ultimate Beginners Guide”

Week 2 – Learn how to create the lark head + square knot

Week 3 – Learn how to create the spiral knot

Week 4 – Learn how to create the berry knot

Week 5 – Master the knots and try to create a plant hanger!

Week 6 – Reflect and summarize my macramé learning journey

Each week, I will teach myself a new knot and create some form of macramé representation to show off the knot I MASTERED (hehe) on that focused week. I’ll document my progress, share photos, and reflect on the challenges with all my fellow blog followers!

While I plan to follow this general layout, I will be keeping an open mind. My plans may shift as I may come across new patterns or creative inspiration from the resources I use throughout this process. That is the fun part about learning a new skill: you can be flexible!

To guide myself through this journey, I’ll use several digital resource platforms to help gain insight and skills. The resources I intend to use are:

  • Tik Tok
  • YouTube
  • Pinterest
  • Facebook groups I follow
  • Google

Thanks for following along! I’m looking forward to learning this new skill and sharing the learning process with all of you. I hope I can help you learn a newfound love for macramé. I’d love to hear from you along the way. Feel free to leave a comment on my blog posts so we can learn and grow together!

Wish me luck!!
