How might we begin to address the ways in which the systems that we teach our curriculum in are intrinsically homophobic, transphobic, biphobic and oppressive towards queer and trans people?

There are many way that we can begin to address the ways in which the education systems that we teach our curriculum in are intrinsically homophobic, transphobic, biphobia, and oppressive towards queer and trans people.

I believe that teachers and students should be educated on LBGTQ+ issues, including identities and pronouns. By getting educated on it, it will creat more support for LGBTQ+  students, by creating a safe space, respecting privacy, and standing up against harassment. I 100%  believe that schools should provide gender-neutral bathrooms and change rooms to allow students to dress in comfortable places. Also Schools should have organizations to provide resources, support, and advocacy on LGBTQ+ for students.

Educating teachers and staff and creating inclusive policies, LGBTQ+ organizations, and many more are all effective strategies that can be implemented to create a safe learning envrioment for all stduents.

  1. I love that you want to create a safe place for students that are not only in the LGBTQ+ community but for all your students. I think that everything you suggest implementing in schools for students and teachers is needed to create these safe environments. Another very important area you suggested is not only educating the students but also the teachers so they can educate students with the right information.

  2. Hi Macy,
I definitely agree that talking about 2SLGBTQIA+ issues is an important step in creating a more inclusive environment for all people. I would however say that the reason it is so important to talk about 2SLGBTQIA+ people so that it is no longer seen as something untypical or not the norm. There are realistically always going to be students in our classes who have people in their lives who identify best as 2SLGBTQIA+ or maybe they themselves do, we may not always see them but they are there. By showing our students that this is a very real and normal part of life we can create a more inclusive society. I also liked how you bring up that teachers need education about inclusive policies because not every person has real life experience or knows how to be inclusive without guidance.
