Hidden Curriculum Within Education
For the Critical Summary Assignment, I chose to look deeper into Hidden Curriculum. I remember briefly discussing this topic during class one night and when I saw that there was an option to study further into it, I did not hesitate to choose it. For me, it is a fascinating concept. Students must learn all the basic subjects such as english, math, and science, but it is important that they learn other “hidden” material too. From an article that I found, they discuss how a hidden curriculum is a curriculum that is taught unintentionally about behaviour and knowledge. They also mention that it is important that teachers are aware of the concept of hidden curriculum, so that students can gain an effective education that will give them a bright future.
Something else that I found interesting in the article that I discovered was the idea that Hidden Curriculum can cause issues in a classroom if it is not used correctly. Hidden Curriculum is more than just asking a student to stop talking. It could be teachers recognizing good behaviour and elaborating on why it is good behaviour. This way, the teachers can create healthy relationships with their students, and the teacher will be able to witness their students learning and growing into well-mannered learners. It is also suggested in the article that there should be courses on how to properly prepare for hidden curriculum, so that all teachers can understand the concept of hidden curriculum and avoid issues in their classroom. I do agree with statement because I think that there is much in a hidden curriculum that could impact a child’s life.
Moving forward, I would like to look deeper into issues that could be caused by hidden curriculum, and how a teacher could plan and use strategies to teach hidden curriculum. I am truly excited to learn more about hidden curriculum. It is something that I have never heard about before, so I cannot wait to be able to look more deeply into this subject and incorporate it into my own classroom one day.
Hi Madeline,
I really enjoyed reading your post because it covered some good points. The hidden curriculum is also something that I have become interested in as well. When you mention what the hidden curriculum is and what it involves, I think it is important that we talk about it being unintentional, as you have done here. It is good that you recognize the importance of having the teachers recognize the aspects of the hidden curriculum as well.
When you mention that “hidden curriculum is more than just asking a student to stop talking,” I wonder what you mean by this. I am interested in if this is what you or the article see as being a common understanding that most people have of the hidden curriculum. I am also curious about the article you are referring to here and if it talks about what types of issues are presented with the hidden curriculum.
When you mention that the teachers can create healthy relationships with their students through looking at the hidden curriculum, this is something that I never thought about but it is important. I also think that going forward, you have a good understanding of the hidden curriculum so you will do well on assignment one!
