As teachers it is a key factor that we are able to understand multiple cultures and languages in the the classroom. Having us teachers be able to have a good understanding about multiculturalism will help unsure the students are educated about it as well.
In my high school and elementary school I was never exposed to other cultures other than what I am. I never had the opportunity to learn about many other cultures, because I was never around them. My school wasn’t very inclusive I do not think it was there fault because most of my teachers also grew up in this small town, and got the same education. so it wasn’t noticed as something that was mandatory. There was never a language barrier in my school as we didn’t have anyone in my class/grade that spoke anything other than English. I definitely want to be able to teach my students about other cultures and languages, as I feel since I wasn’t taught them it made me more confused and frankly unsensitive to others as a young person who didn’t know better. Now from my university education I am proud to say that my multicultural education has grown and I will be able to implement that in my future classroom.
