Food digital citizenship is becoming more and more important to learn every day. Social media is one of the main ways people communicate now and it is so important we as teachers help students learn how to be good citizens online.
There are 9 elements to good digital citizenship: digital access, commerce, communication and collaboration, etiquette, fluency, health and welfare, law, rights and responsibility and security and privacy. All of these are equally important and I will definitely be sure to teach the meanings of them in my classroom. The first step is understanding what digital citizenship looks like.
I plan on showing my students what good online behaviour looks like, not just what it doesn’t look like. I feel as though all too often students are taught what not to do on the internet and are left wondering what good activity looks like. I will also make sure I am not using fear as a tactic to show my students how to use the internet properly. The internet is the way of the world now, and it can be so helpful if used properly. Making kids scared of it is something we should try to really limit. There are still ways to warn kids about the dangers of the internet without completely scaring them away from it.
I want to really emphasize the importance of being kind on the internet to my students. I think a lot of people don’t realize that there are other people on the other side of the screen. Making sure they understand that will be super important to me. I’ve thought of the saying “treat others how you want to be treated.” I’ll tell them to “text others how you want to be texted” or something like that.
Who knows where this world is going in terms of the internet. It is super exciting but can also be scary. Teaching children at a young age how to be good citizens online is super important for making the ever growing world of the internet a better place.
Hi Makenna, I completely agree that it is really important to emphasize the importance of being kind to our students on the internet. As teachers, I truly believe this is something we must do to guide our students in the right direction for success! Take Care!
Hey Makenna! Focusing on what good online behavior looks like rather than just what to avoid is such an important shift. I also agree that teaching them to “text others how you want to be texted” is a perfect way to frame it! Love that!
Hey Makenna,
I really like your emphasis on teaching your students how to be kind to other students online. Everyone says to be kind online but what does that really mean? I think that by teaching and giving students examples of when to be kind in situations would be helpful. I agree that teaching students at a young age about digital citizenship may be scary but it is so important with the rise of technology!
Hi Makenna, I like your post when you said “Treat others how you want to be treated.” I’ll tell them to “text others how you want to be texted” or something like that. this was a good point. People think because it is online they have the right to write anything. I totally agree when we deserve respect so do the others.

Hi! I totally agree with you that students need to learn what to do online too, so that they know how to make proper decisions. Giving students real life examples is a great way to teach them too.
I really like how you want to teach students to be kind online. A lot of students, like you said, get blinded by the internet and don’t realize the impact they have on people on the other side of their comments!
P.S. the beginning line said FOOD digital citizenship and I was so confused hahaha
