Speckles!

This week was very chill for me compared to some of my last. I decided again to focus on painting, but try a technique that I hadn’t before. If you remember from last week, I had the bowl and my tic tac toe board to paint. It took me a while to find out what I wanted to paint this week, but I think they turned out pretty good!

I wanted to go pretty neutral with my bowl and almost create a very natural and neutral vibe. One of my colours of paint looks exactly like the colour of real pottery clay and I felt like that was perfect. Because air dry clay dries kind of white, I decided to paint the whole thing in a wash of this natural clay colour. After I looked at it I thought it was kind of boring so I painted a cactus and some other little grass-like plants inside of the bowl. I was going for a kind of desert vibe. I tried to mix the colours for the actual painting because I didn’t have ones I wanted at home. The green turned out a little more blue than I wanted. Overall I still think it’s pretty cute! I’m actually quite happy with the shape of it after it’s painted. I find it makes it look more uniform.

I sat forever trying to figure out what to paint on my tic tac toe board. Then once I saw my orangey colour that I mixed, I realized it looked very similar to my water bottle! I love the speckles look so that’s what I decided to do. I looked on tiktok for video tutorials. Most of them used a toothbrush or paint brush to splatter the paint on but they all seemed kind of messy and I wasn’t really feeling like cleaning all of the paint up. After scrolling I saw a video where she used the end of the brush! I was like why didn’t I think of that? I’ll cut myself some slack as it was a long week! Instead of a toothbrush, I used the end of a small paint brush. I liked that as I kept dotting, the size of the speckles got smaller as the paint wore off. I’m super super happy with this one and I think it might even be my best work yet. Next week I’m going to make the game pieces and I’ll probably stick with the speckled vibes. I want to make another one in the future, there are so many cute options. Here is a video of a bunch of cute ones I saw on Pinterest!

  4. Those both look great! I didn’t know that the other end of a paintbrush could be used to create speckles like that! Definitely going to keep that tool in my back pocket.

  6. Hi Makenna!
This looks great! I have always wanted to work more with clay or do a pottery class. When I was in high school, we got to do a pottery class in Art and it was so much fun.

Can’t wait to see what else you create!
