In developing my approach to digital citizenship education, I find inspiration in a rich tapestry of resources illuminating the intricacies and subtleties of navigating the digital landscape. Jason Ohler’s passionate advocacy for character education in the digital age underscores the transformative potential of instilling values of integrity, empathy, and responsibility in students’ online interactions. By weaving character education principles, such as honesty, respect, and compassion, into digital citizenship lessons, I aspire to cultivate a culture of ethical behaviour and digital mindfulness in my classroom, sparking a positive change in our student’s digital lives.
Nathan Jurgenson’s thought-provoking concept of ‘The IRL Fetish’ compels us to transcend the traditional dichotomies of online versus offline interactions and recognize the inherent value of digital spaces. In shaping my digital citizenship curriculum, I am driven to bridge the gap between physical and virtual realms, urging students to critically assess the influence of technology on their identities, relationships, and societal engagement. By incorporating these elements into my teaching practices, I aim to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to navigate the complexities of the digital world confidently and ethically.
In translating these insights into actionable strategies for my classroom, I plan to
adopt a multifaceted approach that stimulates experiential learning, critical inquiry, and collaborative projects.
