Hello, My name is Masika Sikwaya, and I am currently in my third year of pre k-5 bachelor’s of education. I live on a Treaty 4 territory, Regina, Saskatchewan. My map consists of places I visit frequently. Firstly, my house is a place where I spend most of my time if no other plans are in tact. Home has always been more of a space to connect with my family , creating and enjoying moments. My other place added to the map is my workplace. I have been working at a daycare for a year plus-almost two years now. I get to spend my time with children and learn new interesting things from them. These experiences have helped me expand my knowledge in my field. My other place, which is one of my top favourites, is my church. I and my family go to church every Saturday. My church family is very loving and welcoming. At this place, I get the chance to teach Sabbath school to kindergarteners every other sabbath. I love singing, especially in choirs, and so I am part of the church choir. In this place i get to not only build my relationship with God but also connect with others around me. At the University of Regina, I have had the chance to pursue my dream job. I have also gotten to meet new people and friends. In my spare time, I love going for walks in the neighbouring parks. My family loves evening walks, so at times we walk together, chatting and laughing.
In terms of the environment, I love the parks and walking paths throughout my neighbourhood. While going for walks, the view is very satisfying in a way that one gets a sense of appreciating nature. The walking paths have small water bodies present, plants/ bushes. These water bodies, more like swamps have quite a number of geese swimming around, This would be great space for having students move/hike while learning from the environment. The space looks clean and well taken cared of. It is sure our responsibility to take care of the land as it does for us. Land is the most significant to the Indigenous people; it is more than just a property, it is their identity, their culture.
