Critical Teaching Manifesto

As an educator you should give students the tools to learn/develop new social and intellectual skills while engaging in lessons as well as in group and individual assignments/discussions. Being able to develop these skills will allow students to become more independent, confident and knowledgeable. Having social and intellectual abilities allows for factual information to fight for social justice.

An inclusive classroom is vital to the success of everyone involved in the learning process. Allowing people to express themselves and be themselves is important not only for respect, but also for productivity. My view of a classroom is a safe and engaging area that is open to all that wish to learn.

Relationships are the foundation to a strong classroom dynamic. As a future educator, relationships will be at the forefront of my profession. Having strong relationships will allow me to talk to students to make sure they feel safe and are heard. Being on level ground with the students will ensure this. Level ground meaning having equal conversations where there is no hierarchy in play.

As a future educator I must challenge some norms of society to allow for open-minded thinking across the classroom. This type of learning may be more difficult as some topics may be sensitive, however it is vital in expanding students minds. Challenging these norms is also beneficial when looking at our society’s commonsense. Other areas of the world have different ways of life, and having a sense of place is important for a student.
